Introduction
Negotiation is the process whereby two or more individuals come together with an aim of reaching an agreement regarding a particular issue. Conflict negotiation on the other hand is the process by which individuals involved in a conflict agree to come together and make convincing decisions regarding the problem. During conflict negotiation, a third neutral party is often involved to help in solving the conflict. The third party is known as a negotiator.
Qualities That Make Someone A Good Negotiator
A good negotiator should not make issues or suggestions personal; a good negotiator behaves in a friendly way and understands that his/her role is to help maintain peace and assist the conflicting parties come into an agreement. A good negotiator should embrace the technique of separating themselves from emotional emotional reactions. The negotiators should therefore learn about the tactics of calming themselves down when overtaken by emotions.
Another quality of a good negotiator is flexibility. A good negotiator should be realistic and justifiable. They should show develop creative strategies of developing both parties in conflict interest without being judgmental. A good negotiator should also take into considerations all forms of available solutions. A good negotiator shows empathy and kindness to individuals under conflict, he/she takes a third side of patience, creativity, effective listening and kindness. He/she takes into consideration the needs of individuals and treat them as their own problems ( Spaho,2013). Finally a good negotiator is one who is able to appreciate other individuals.
Views On Ideas Represented On TED Talk
The ideas represented on TED talk are very beneficial. Ted encourages individuals to be creative negotiators. Ted further emphasizes on the importance of a negotiator in playing the role of a third person. Ted states the role of a third party to be that of showing kindness and appreciation to other people, he further says that a negotiator should be flexible to any situation, this is evident in the different stories he gives as examples ("TED Conflict Negotiation", 2017).
My Advice To My Classmates On Better Ways Of Conflict Negotiation
I would advise my classmates to approach conflict negotiation in four main perspectives. The first perspective to conflict negotiation is through effective listening. Effective listening enhances a better understanding of the matter at hand. The second approach to conflict negotiation is through being an innovative and creative problem solver. A negotiator should be first identified the problem causing the conflict, analyze differences or similarities of issues among the parties in conflict, explain the interest of the conflict to the concerned parties and then develop an appropriate non judgemental problem solving approach.the negotiator should be careful not to lean on one side and respect every individual ideology. Thirdly, a negotiator an should focus on a relationship result oriented approach. This implies that negotiators should aim at at achieving a win-win problem solution approach and ensure that all the concerned parties are satisfied with his/her decision. Finally, the best conflict negotiation approach, patience, creativity and avoid taking issues personally.
Conclusion
Conflict negotiation should be aimed at attaining peace and helping individuals develop and learn from their mistakes so as to prevent the conflict from reoccurring.
