Midlands Science is a not-for-profit development company, which works to create greater interest in STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths] education and skills among students, teachers and members of the public in the four counties of the Midlands [Laois, Offaly, Longford and Westmeath]. Midlands Science values education, continuous learning and up-skilling as key building blocks for sustainable regional development. In collaboration with partners from the private, public and community sectors, Midlands Science is committed to facilitating and delivering a number of targeted annual education initiatives in the Midlands. This work enables Midlands Science to reach 13,000 people directly per annum at events and workshops.

The Midlands Science Festival is a seminal week-long event that promotes and celebrates the importance of science and technology across all age groups in the region. It is a carefully planned programme which showcases science in a variety of different ways, attracts large and diverse audiences and receives extensive media coverage. This exciting and innovative festival provides approximately 130 different science education outreach events and activities. The work of Midlands Science has been independently and positively evaluated by Behaviour & Attitudes Ltd and the Edinburgh Science Festival and was found to be impactful, creative and innovative. Midlands Science use evaluation to measure impact but also to adjust programmes as necessary in order to achieve maximum impact and benefit.

Mansoor is the manager of the Black Sea Manufacturing Company (“BSMC”) in Mangalia, Romania. Mangalia is a small town on the coast of the Black Sea. BSMC employs 1000 people, which is about ½ of the population of the small town of Mangalia, Romania. Mansoor has a good relationship with his boss, Ali, who lives and works for BSMC’s headquarters in Dubai.
BSMC water emissions (waste coming out of the factory into the Black Sea) at Mansoor’s factory were consistently over the acceptable pollution guidelines set by the town of Mangalia. Several months ago, Mansoor got a call from his boss Ali, who told him that the town had started fining BSMC a large sum of money every month due to the water pollution being too high.
Mansoor admitted that the water pollution was a continual problem, but because headquarters would not invest in new technology to clean the waste before it is dumped into the Black Sea, he didn’t know how to solve the pollution problem. Ali told Mansoor that the only way the company could afford the new technology was to fire 250 of the workers at Mansoor’s factory. Ali pointed out to Mansoor that other factories in Mangalia were in worse shape than BSMC and somehow, they were meeting the town’s pollution standards. Ali said that the company could not afford to be fined every month for these violations. Mansoor assured Ali that he would look into the matter.
Mansoor immediately called the other manufacturing factories in Mangalia. He learned they were scheduling their heavy emissions work (work that produced a lot of pollution) at night so that during the day when the town took did their water pollution test readings, their factory pollution levels were within standards.
Six months went by, BSMC was paying large fines every month, and Mansoor still had not found a good solution. Finally, Mansoor spoke with the Bulgaria government and was told that Bulgaria does not have as strict of water pollution laws as Romania. The Bulgarian representative invited Mansoor to relocate the Black Sea factory to Kavarna, Bulgaria, which is only 45 kilometers south of the current location of the factory, and also on the Black Sea. The current employees could drive back and forth across the border to the new factory every day. However, the Bulgarian government requires that at least 50% of the workers in Black Sea’s factory be Bulgarian citizens.
Ali told Mansoor he had only one week to decide what to do or he would lose his job.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) refers to ways that companies or firms adopt in their business activities that are ethical, society friendly, and accrues benefits to the community regarding development (Mourougan, 2015).
Corporate social responsibility managers rely on several core competencies that are aimed at improving the welfare of the community as well as the business itself. Some of the competencies are strategic business, community partnership and harnessing diversity (Maimunah , 2009).
Integra strategic plan is to create awareness of science and technology among teachers and students. To achieve this strategy the company has initiated collaborations among primary and secondary schools aimed at enhancing innovation through science and technology and by supporting science, technology, engineering and maths experience in schools.
There are solid arguments that support corporate social responsibility. One of the substantial evidence for pursuing a strategic CSR program is the reason that it could lead to innovation (Asongu, 2007).
Maria believes that industries need a diverse approach in the development of new methods and products. Maria advocates for disruptive innovation to enhance effective growth and excellence of businesses in today’s industries. However, to enhance a continual improvement in the products development, skills and expertise need to be improved by the industry leaders.
Ethical issues have arisen in the determination of harmful pollutants through scientific research. Formulation of environmental pollution policy on the guidelines of emission of pollutants is marred with double standards while factories focus is on production rather than environment conservation (Elliott, 2016).
Mansoor is faced with a dilemma of laying off 250 employees to invest in a technology that helps reduce the water pollution discharge to the black sea. Moreover, relocation of the firm to Bulgaria government where the water pollution measures are less strict is an ethical issue. Conservation of the ecosystem remains a duty of conscience regardless of regulations governing the act. Therefore, Mansoor should do the right thing.
Mansoor is faced with an opportunity to act in the best interest of conserving the environment through collaboration with the government to reduce pollution activities by competitors’ factories. Mansoor knows the pollution activities in the rival factories as illegal and devastating to the sea life.
Mansoor after calling the other factories in Mangalia found out that most factories maximize their manufacturing activities during the night to reduce the emission to the black sea during the day. This is a moral hazard outcome which must be addressed to save the sea life in the Black Sea. Therefore, Mansoor has a moral obligation to report the matter to the relevant authorities.
Mansoor understands that the water pollution problem hurts the sea life. Excessive pollution activities result in loss of sea life which is detrimental to the ecosystem. The option of the company to lay off some employees is a brilliant idea as compared to continuous pollution. The ecosystem life is of greater importance than individual employment benefits. Therefore, conservation of the ecosystem ought to be given more priority.
