In this assignment you are asked to explore a range of issues around IT Professionalism through a process of research, analysis, and critical discussion and to develop your own conclusions.
A simple scan of any day’s news headlines will usually identify at least one instance where Information Technology has been used inappropriately, or where people within the IT industry have acted unprofessionally. A cynical observer might be tempted to conclude that notions of professionalism and ethical behaviour may be important concepts for those studying IT, but when it comes to everyday practice they do not matter
Your analysis should take into account a range of stakeholder opinions and include evidence where appropriate. The paper should conclude with your views on the concept of Professionalism, based upon your analysis and discussion.
The structure is for you to decide, but it should contain three elements:
- Literature Review - a description of what is said in the academic and professional literature about this issue. A list of recommended reading is attached below.
- Analysis – a critical examination and discussion of the issues and different opinions, including what was said during classes where appropriate. Your analysis should focus on the four professional modalities (Social, Legal, Ethical and Professional). You are encouraged to make use of an appropriate analytical framework. Guidance will be provided during the module classes.
- Conclusion - your considered opinion based upon the review of the literature and your assessment of the range of view points discussed in the Analysis.
