Burns et al., (2016) has discussed three domains that directly help the Nursing practitioners (NPs) in maintaining children health. Among them the developmental pattern, functional health problem and diseases are the essential factors that support the NPs most.
Under the developmental section, the two things are included, one is the developmental issues that are long-term in nature, and another one is the progression of lifespan. According to the estimation of The National Survey of Children’s Health, 15% of total children are at a region of moderate risk regarding social, behavioral, developmental delay conditions whereas 11% of the children are at high-risk zone (Burns et al., 2016). Identifying the developmental problem is a very much serious issue because a child's entire future is entirely dependent on the developmental. NPs mainly evaluate the cognitive, fine motor, gross motor, speech and language, and social, emotional and adaptive behaviors while assessing the developmental problem. Moreover, these factors related to children health help NPs to evaluate health care pattern of children.
The term ‘Functional health problem’ has come from Gordon's functional health patterns and it is integrated into the International taxonomy of nursing diagnoses. The models supply a framework for the NPs to solve the problems independently. This pattern is the same for the whole world regarding culture, age, sex, and economic condition. It can help the NPs universally in maintaining children health development. The functional problems are the central area of the concern for the family as they are the primitive carer for their children. In the functional health domain NPs mainly maintains the health and nutrition of children. They will also keep close eyes on the child’s activities, sleep patterns, level of stress tolerance and cognitive response. These information’s related to the functional health of the children will help NPs to resolve the problem of the children. For example, the problem can be like child abuse in the context of role-relationship. Many stages of functional health sector are incorporated in the NANDA taxonomy.
The disease domain include the past medical history and as well family history of the children. This information will help the NPs to evaluate the condition of the children. After that, they can start proper medication with the help of ICD-10-CM. For example, diseases like Otitis media, appendicitis, and streptococcal pharyngitis can be diagnosed by ICD-10-CM. The ICD-10-CM is developed to assess the primary symptoms of the diseases to the doctor and as well to the NPs. NPs should use the assessment procedure that can give them the proper idea related to the etiology of the disease. It can evaluate the physiological problems in an extremely healthy manner with limitations in some factors that include behavioral, developmental and social. The information gathered from the disease domain help NPs to resolve such problem very easily.
Hence, it can be concluded that the three factors discussed by Burns et al., (2016) are very much helpful for NPs to maintain the health care patterns in children and to continue the child health development.
