Competencies of a Nurse Executive
Several competencies needed for one to be a successful nurse executive. First, effective communication is necessary for relationship building with subordinate staff and patients. Again, communication is required since health sector faces complex issues which must be resolved, just like other organization.
Second, nurse executive must develop a collaborative relationship with community leaders, legislators, and other stakeholders in order to develop trust. With trust, nursing and other organizational goals become the burden of every player, thus working together towards accomplishing them (McPhee et al, 2009).
Third, nurse executive must uphold integrity in before, during, and after making decisions for the interest of the organization. It means, therefore, that such a person must not favor specific partners in the expense of exploiting others. Still, the consensus of all the stakeholders is applied when making decisions.
Difference Between Transformational and Transactional Nursing Leader
It is crucial that anyone who desires to become a nurse manager understand the distinctions between the transactional and transformational leadership styles. Besides, leading a successful team of health workers requires figuring out the best leadership style that is likely to unite the leader and the rest of the employees.
Transactional nurse emphasizes on sanctioning rewards and punishments to improve task performance. In fact, such leadership is fully dependent on transactions performed between the executive health member and the subordinate staff members since it founded on the theory that rewarding and disciplining are critical to motivating employees.
On the other hand, transformational nursing leader concentrates on team-building and motivation of employees in various hierarchies of the organization. The leader leads by example, portraying an optimistic personality that inclines staff members to remain focused in their different capacities (Uhrenfeldt & Hall, 2007). Instead of negative incentives, transformation nurse leaders utilize positive incentives to motivate subordinate employees.
Leading the Charge
In nursing, a prelicensure program is entitled to make nursing students appreciate the importance of supervised clinical experience. Instructors depict transformational leadership by being a role model in various practices (Uhrenfeldt & Hall, 2007). In the process, practicing nurses develop competency to handle multiple patients’ conditions.
