- Describe the results of the Work Environment Assessment you completed on your workplace.
Based on the survey that I carried out with my colleagues, it was evident to us that Clark Healthy Workplace is an unhealthy environment. This is the reason we had to come up with an ideal plan of making this workplace a viable one. With my team, we designed four stages of group development. The first stage required each member of the group to present new ideas and responsibilities to each group member. The second stage involved brainstorming as a group while the third stage involved initiating since group members were already informed at this stage. In the fourth stage, we putting the ideas into action.
- Identify two things that surprised you about the results and one idea you believed prior to conducting the Assessment that was confirmed.
The first thing that surprised me is that nurses were threatened by the chief nursing officer that their pay raise will be withheld if they continue complaining of the unhealthy workplace. Another thing that surprised me is that the representatives of the union were not aware of the meeting that the chief nursing officer was charged with unfair labor practices. One idea that I held before conducting assessment was that the solutions to workplace problems can be generated through brainstorming ideas by team members working as a team (Kaiser & Westers, 2018). This idea was confirmed when the nurses working as a team brainstormed ideas on how uncivil behaviors can be reported and as a result, the chief nursing officer was punished for encouraging unhealthy and unfair workplace practices.
- Explain what the results of the Assessment suggest about the health and civility of your workplace.
After carrying out the assessment, the results have shown that teamwork is the foundation of the health and civility of the workplace. This is so because when employees collaborate and interact with each other freely in the organization, new ideas of solving issues that affect these employees at work can be generated (Souza et al. , 2016). Apart from that, working as a team supports the shared vision in the organization. Also, the diversity in the workplace is important because it reduces unfair practices and conflicts since malpractices will be reported to the relevant authorities.
- Briefly describe the theory or concept presented in the article(s) you selected.
In the article I have chosen (Clark 2011), the model presented is “describing the specific situation, expressing concerns, stating alternatives and consequences” (DESC). This model is used to describe the incivilities issues in the workplace. This is so because, with the DESC model, communication and teamwork skills can be improved since the model provides measures that can be taken to reinforce communication and teamwork skills (Clark et al. , 2011). With effective communication and teamwork, quality care can be delivered to the patients.
- Explain how the theory or concept presented in the article(s) relates to the results of your Work Environment Assessment.
The model in the article provides solutions to the uncivil behaviors that can occur in the workplace and since the results of my assessment showed uncivil behaviors in the workplace, this model is therefore related to the results of my assessment. For uncivil behaviors to be addressed in the organization, a critical conversation with the uncivil colleague must be done. This can be done with the help of the DESC model which outlines the procedure for achieving a respectful conversation among employees in the organization. Also, the article relates to the results of my assessment because it outlines the significance of conflict resolution through effective communication at the workplace. The uncivilities in the organization based on my results include first, the chief nursing officer conducting an unapproved and unscheduled meeting. In addition to this, the nurses were threatened that their pay raise will be withheld by the chief nursing officer. Moreover, nurses could not join the union which advocates for their rights. These uncivilities show that there are conflicts in the organization that need to be addressed through effective communication.
- Explain how your organization could apply the theory highlighted in your selected article(s) to improve organizational health and/or create stronger work teams
The organization can improve the quality and safety of care delivered by creating an evidence-based team which will improve communication in the organization through the use of the DESC model. Also, the organization needs to address specific uncivil situations that arise. For example, when the chief nursing officer in the organization conducted a meeting that was not approved, he needs to not only be punished but also be guided on the proper way of communicating to the relevant authorities before conducting such meetings.
- Recommend at least two strategies, supported in the literature, that can be implemented to address any shortcomings revealed in your Work Environment Assessment.
One of the shortcomings that my assessment has revealed is the lack of open communication in the organization. The strategy that can be used to address this shortcoming is inclusivity. Inclusivity involves doing a proper consultation and involving all employees in the decision-making process in the organization. Through proper consultation, employees will feel valued and respected by the organization (Clark, 2015). This will help to close the gap between the management and the junior employees that exist in the organization. Another shortcoming is poor leadership. Poor leadership is demonstrated when the CNO threatens to withhold the nurses’ pay raise. The strategy that can be used to address this shortcoming is training leaders on effective leadership skills. This training will equip leaders with effective leadership skills including respecting the rights of employees (Griffin & Clark, 2014). For example, nurses have a right to join unions which advocates for their rights.
- Recommend at least two strategies that can be implemented to bolster successful practices revealed in your Work Environment Assessment.
One of the strategies for bolstering successful practices in the workplace is employee motivation. The nurses need to be motivated to deliver quality care in the organization. Nurses can be motivated when they are awarded for their individual or teamwork efforts. Rewarding nurses will make nurses feel that the organization respects and values their efforts and this will motivate them to work hard and deliver quality care (Kalisch et al. , 2015). Also, setting the goals that are SMART will help bolster successful practices in the organization. This is so because, with SMART goals, all the employees will be knowing what is expected of them in achieving these goals (Souza et al. , 2016). All employees will, therefore, be geared towards meeting these goals which will bolster successful practices in the workplace.
