1. Arrange the leading causes of death in U.S, based on your opinion on their severity.
Based on my perception the leading death causes in 2014 in the U.S were:
- Diabetes mellitus
- Heart disease
- Motor vehicle crash
- Fire related injuries
- Shark attack
- Zika virus
2. Which of these concerns you most and why?
I am concerned the most about suicidal ideation in the young age group. Teenagers have a tendency to inflict self harm on them when they suffer from psychological disturbances. This self-intended behavior of dying makes them opt for practices like suffocation, strangulation, poisoning or use of firearms. Suicides occur due to financial stress, sexual abuse, remorse, substance abuse and psychological problems like depression and schizophrenia. This cause worries me much because suicidal incidents create severe consequences on the family and near ones of the deceased. Suicidal attempts often lead to accidental deaths as well. Family history of such ideations increases the risk of self harm activities.
3. From the actual mortality rate data (Appendix B), you can understand that suicide ranked third in terms of severity (Cdc.gov, 2017). Can you suggest any measures to prevent it?
It is a complex health issue and can be prevented by sharing thoughts of isolation with friends and family, seeking for early diagnosis of substance abuse or depression, reducing access to lethal items that can cause harm and connecting an affected person with suicide prevention helplines.
