Question:

Search strategy and results identified from search with the articles located clearly documented. The key themes of the research articles should be highlighted. Choose an area that is under-researched where a meta-analysis or literature review does not exist i.e. in a specific population group, location, setting or topic. It is recommended you narrow your search to between 6-12 research articles for the word limit. Use your inclusion/exclusion criteria to do this i.e. date, geography, population.

The essay is split into the five sections described below and you should use these subheadings to guide the content:

  1. Rationale 20 marks

Provide some background to your chosen topic, and write a rationale for your choice of topic and how it is related to your practice/discipline, and why it is important to investigate this area.

Introduce the main concept or definitions e.g. what you mean by ‘child’.

  1. Research question 5 marks

Clear research question using PICO format if appropriate starting with the phrase ‘what is the evidence that…’

  1. Search strategy 30 marks

Replicable and detailed search strategy including key words, search terms, databases used, inclusion and exclusion criteria i.e. date, language, study type etc.

Clear demonstration of how you got to your final article number. You can support your search strategy using a flow diagram if this helps i.e. number of hits, exclusions.

Literature reviews or meta-analysis should not be included.

  1. Main findings 25 marks

Some commentary on the types of evidence you found and how it relates to  the hierarchy of evidence.

Identified themes from the research articles- this is not a critical appraisal  but identification of the areas that a critical appraisal could discuss from the studies you found.

How these findings can enhance your future practice in your respective discipline.

Demonstrate the ability to design an appropriate PICO research question and design and undertake a systematic search strategy in a public health area

Understand and critique the evidence base for public health and how this is utilised in practice and policy development in a wide range of health topics

Apply critical appraisal techniques to quantitative and qualitative research studies and be able to synthesise what findings mean for public health research and practice.

Demonstrate understanding of public health epidemiological study design features including key statistical concepts and interpretation of data, graphs and tables.

The University of South Wales uses anti-plagiarism software throughout undergraduate and postgraduate studies. It is expected that all written work will be submitted through this software by the student, before being handed in. The written work submitted to Turnitin must be identical to that which is submitted in e-paper format, and also has to be submitted before the assessment deadline. This process MUST be performed in all circumstances (including extenuating circumstances) or the work will be marked as a non submission and given a mark of ‘0’. It is strongly suggested that you submit your work through Turnitin a full 24 hours before the deadline as there can be delays in submission.

Each of your modules of study will have a link to turnitin on the VLE site. You must upload your work to the correct module site. Guidance on using turnitin is given on the VLE.

The work for this module will be submitted entirely via turnitin and marked in grademark.

Marking criteria

Please review the General Marking Criteria for Post Graduate Assessments file posted on the VLE before week 1. The pass mark for this coursework is 40%.

Completion of Assessment

The deadline date for handing in this assessment is end of week 8 Sunday by 11 pm (23:00 hours) VLE (UTC) time. This is a deadline – you may hand in your work prior to this date, but not after the date. Coursework handed in later than the due date will not be accepted. There are no extensions on deadlines.

If you fail to hand in work on time, you may be given another opportunity to do so (re-sits) but this work is capped at 40%. This means the highest mark you can achieve is 40%, regardless of the actual score.

If you do not hand in work on time, but would like to apply for ‘extenuating circumstances’ these applications are available from the student advice shop. Your application will be reviewed by a panel. Remember, extenuating circumstances applies only to circumstances such as serious illness (such as hospitalisation) or death in the family. All documentation must be provided to prove this. For a full explanation of this procedure, please contact the student advice shop.

Extenuating circumstances

If this is as a result of a serious illness or some other serious cause, then you should draw these extenuating circumstances to our attention through the correct procedures. These forms can only be obtained from the student advice shop NOT from your module leader or personal tutor. You will be asked to re-submit your work at the next opportunity and your mark for that component will not be capped.
