Summary of ideas from a video (TEDxToronto - Don Tapscott)
Introduction
In the current era there is need to rebuild the world, as most of the institutions such as science, industrial modeled government, media, energy grid and education are collapsing (TEDx Talks). Many of the institutions have come at the end of their life cycle, for instance is the education. This institution cannot take us forward (TEDx Talks). The world has changed over the years, especially in the advancement of the technology, either in the hospital, and design of modern building. This has been attributed to the advancement of the technology over the years. Nonetheless, when one looks at the education sector there is nothing which has changed. In the past, one could enter into a class and a professor give lectures to the student, who would write notes, up to date this is still being undertaken nothing much has changed. The model of learning has remained unchanged possibly over the century. However, there is a new generation of people which is likely to bring about the change regarded as the digital native (TEDx Talks). These kinds are learning differently as comparison to the digital emigrant who did not have access to the technology to learn. In this research, it will look on the future of the education and the reference would be a video by Don Tapscott on TEDx Talks. Further, it will draw various ideas from this source and base on personal experiences.
The powerful force which will change the current education system would be the students. They are the current generation in the digital age. The current generation are utilizing the technology in their learning. This millennials are making their mark when it comes to the higher educations. This has plugged in the generation which learns differently, and education are starting to take the note (TEDx Talks). Yet the education industry, with more emphasis to the focus work, over the collaborative approaches millennials they prefer, may not be adapting quickly enough. This group of students are bringing new technology and big ideas in the classroom. It is import for the education industry to rethink on how they will engage with the student and understand how to focus on the digital technology in the learning (TEDx Talks). When one is in the generation native as Don calls it, and one tend to prefer to get information on a given topic from the internet rather than read the physical books. Joggling with the classwork, watching TV, and listening to the music is the norm of every student in the current generation and this helps them to concentrate more when reading or doing a class assignment.
The fundamental aspect of the education is learning the challenge. The current changes in the society such as the growth of importance particularly to the modern information and communication technology pose a great challenge to the new millennium, particularly to the education system (TEDx Talks). To survive in the this complex world especially in the education system in the 21st Century, the new generation need to apply and develop wide range of competences which are related to the information and technology with the focus on the skills such as the creativity, critical thinking along with communication and collaboration (TEDx Talks). Personal experience on this aspect in class is when one tells the lecture that instead of reading for them his note and writing them down; it would be better he provides the handout, so that the learners could read on the topic and then they could have group collaboration and discussion. This is one way which that can help enhance the learning and improve the education system, as compared to lecturing. In most of the cases when it comes to lecturing most of the concept taught learners usually forget to remember.
The lecture model of broadcast is not a good way of teaching the students. The current model is based on the lecture, where the lecturer is in the broadcast mode, they transmit the information and the student’s takes in to their short term memory (TEDx Talks). The disadvantage of this method is that the student are less likely to remember much of what they are taught, when they are tested. There is need to have a more interactive learning to enable leaners develop, deeper cognitive structure to enable them remember when they asked about the concept in the tests. Interactive learning from is all about learning lifelong skills, especially on how to communicate with others and be able to solve problems and collaborate (TEDx Talks). Moreover, it helps one to understand interrelationship between things.
Conclusion
The current education system globally needs reforms since it has reached the end of its life cycle. The other institution such as the health, media and industrial modeled government have significantly changed due to the advancement of the technology. The education system has remained the same since few decades ago and nothing has improved over the years. However, the new digital native generation will help change the education system on the way they are learning. The sector should focus more on interactive learning rather than broadcasting method which is used by the lectures, to bring change to the system.
