Critical theory approach is the thought process which is characterized and developed with the help of fundamental, reflective thinking by associating the theoretical and practical knowledge upon the subject of discussion. Critiquing is not only a process that showcases the negative aspect or the gap in the knowledge; it also highlights the aspects that are positive and the ones that can be used in the future for further research and discussion. Critical thinking and critical theory are both similar concepts (Western, 2013). Critical approach of leadership includes : . Emancipation, Depth analysis, Looking awry, Systemic praxis (Osborn et al., 2002).
The organisation that is going to the discussed in this assignment is Amazon Inc, over the time the organisation has developed and grown to be the world’s biggest e-commerce company. The leader of the organisation is Jeff Bezos and the company runs with the values and principles of the leader. The leadership style that is followed by him is a mixture of Transformational as well as visionary in characteristic. Bezos believes in change in order to grow and develop for the future, this aspect makes him a transformational leader (Onorato, 2013). On the other hand, he is farsighted and has developed the business model in a manner which will be best suited for the future, thus making innovation a major part of the business model. This aspect of his characteristics makes him visionary in nature (Taylor et al. 2014).
Here the leadership context that applies to the organisation and the style that has been adopted by the owner of the organisation is based on dynamic equilibrium context (Osborn et al., 2002). As the company encourages and motivates innovation both in the product as well as in the process there has to be an understanding of the change procedure. In this leadership context there is a change in the priorities depending upon the objectives of the business (Renko et al., 2015). Critically evaluating the context based on Amazon, the leaders initiate the changes depending upon the innovations that encouraged (Osborn et al., 2002). The company follows a top down hierarchal structure which encourages the process of initiating a disruptive innovation. For example: the company has recently developed a service called Amazon Go, it is a fully automated grocery store which is said to be the future of retail. The strategies that are initiated by the company formulates the process by which the performance of the organisation will depend, as the changes that are initiated are continued and absorbed in the process the performance evaluation also keeps changing (Osborn et al., 2002). The dynamic equilibrium is important and appropriate for an organisation that operates in the e-commerce or IT sector as the industry is heavily driven by innovation, everyday there is some innovation which makes the business model weaker than the other competitors in the market. The far-sighted nature of the leader enables the company to grow in the direction of future demand. Giving the company competitive advantage over the other organisations in the industry. Lack of stability can be a major issue in this context as there is always a situation of change in the organization process. The transition of the company from being completely IT based to retail be a significant change in the process (Pinnington, 2011).
The future critical theory approach is important as it gives a holistic understanding to the subject of discussion and helps in reaching and solving an issue. For a manager it is important to have critical evaluation skills in order to communicate and formulate clear messages for the subordinates as well as the seniors so that any issues or grievances can be resolved in a fair and justified manner (Western, 2013). Critical evaluation helps the management to analyze a situation considering both the positive and the negative aspects equally. This is done with the help of theoretical as well as working knowledge and experience that an individual gathers over the years (Western, 2013).
Critical approach will help me in the future as the analysis of any situation or any subject that I will conduct will have a reflective as well as theoretical aspect to it. This characteristic of the critical approach will help me be fair and will justify my actions. In the future I would like to be a transformational leader which would require me to take decisions that would lead to change in the process or service. In order to initiate the change it is important to critically evaluate the opportunities, threat, weakness and the strengths of the situation.
It can be concluded that the process of critical thinking requires a broader perspective and fundamental theoretical knowledge in order to channelize the thought process in a critical manner.
