Designing a Human Resource Development Plan for a Start-up Company

Introduction to the Start-up

You have studied HRM in college and are now employed by Atlantic Consulting who help businesses solve business problems.  Atlantic Consulting have been hired by a new start-up company to design a Human Resource Development (HRD) plan for them.  The start-up owners are very optimistic about the future for their company and want a HRD plan that will ensure all employees will have the opportunity to maximise their potential.
Your plan will demonstrate best practice in employee development (performance management, reward management, learning and development) and in fostering good employee relations (including the provision of a safe work environment).  The owners have also indicated to you that they may open some offices abroad so your HRD plan must advise on good practice with regard to transferring staff overseas.
Prepare a detailed report for the start-up that demonstrates high knowledge of good practice in each of the areas listed.

The Report Structure:
?Include the Plagiarism Disclaimer (your typed name will suffice) at the start of your document
?This is an academic project so you must use academic, and other reputable sources, to support your work.
oHarvard referencing should be used as per GMIT library guidelines.
oA minimum of 10 sources (textbooks, electronic journals/articles, official reports, reputable websites etc.) of information from reputable authors should be used to support your discussion.  Include a full bibliography.
oYour bibliography is not included in the word count.
?It is expected that the writing will be free from spelling, punctuation and grammar errors.
Please ensure that all paraphrasing and quotations are referenced properly. Do not copy and paste work from another author or self-plagiarise (copying your own work previously submitted to this or any other institute). All student submissions will be thoroughly screened by anti-plagiarism software and any deliberate attempt to plagiarise will be treated as a very serious offence.

Some Guidelines:

1.Introduction to the start-up:
Describe the nature of the start-up company and provide some background information.  Create a fictional company or base it on an existing start-up company of interest (local business, family business etc.)  Outline the type of products/services it provides and the workforce in it (skilled or semi-skilled workers, performance expectations etc.).  Explain why they want a HRD plan.
[Approx 200 words]
2.Performance Management
Discuss the performance management system you propose for the start-up explaining the purpose and objectives of it.  Outline how employee performance will be appraised and what your plan proposes for employee engagement and motivation.  Explain some of the pitfalls with what you are proposing.
[Approx 700 words]

3.Reward System
Outline the objective of the reward system for the start-up.  Describe the composition of your reward package (financial, non-financial).  Explain how your proposals will motivate the start-up’s employees and achieve high levels of performance.
[Approx 600 words]
4.Learning and Development
Discuss the importance and benefits of planned Learning and Development for the start-up.  Differentiate between training and development and outline your proposals for both.  Explain how your proposals will motivate the start-up’s employees and achieve high levels of performance.
 [Approx 600 words]
5.Fostering good employee relations
Outline the importance of good employee relations and justify which overall approach you recommend for the start-up.  Describe the expected levels of employee participation, explain to what extent you propose employees will have a voice and how management should listen to employees (and vice versa).  Discuss some of the common issues that employees and employers can have and suggest what management can do to manage these challenges so that the start-up’s performance levels remain high.
[Approx 600 words]
6.Health, Safety and Wellbeing
Explain the importance of Health and Safety, and Wellbeing in modern organisations.  Outline the roles and responsibilities of both employees and employers.  Explain some of the main Health, Safety and Wellbeing challenges facing the start-up and what management can do to address them in a proactive way so that all staff can perform their jobs to a high standard.
7.International HRM
Discuss the HR challenges associated with operating a business in more than one country.  Outline the overall approach you think the start-up should take.  Suggest how some of the HR activities discussed earlier in the report might need to be adapted if the start-up was to operate in other countries.
