Final Year Project (FYP) Project Title Technical differences between conventional method, EC7 & BS 8006 for soil nailed slope design Main Supervisor Co Supervisor Date Submitted 16/08/2021 Project Type (Tick as appropriate) Research Commercialisation Lab Equipment Industrial Application Competition Others (Specify) Project Synopsis (Briefly describe the project within 100 words. You may use an extra sheet of paper) Soil nail is a commonly used slope stabilisation method due to its technical suitability, ease of construction and relatively maintenance free. This stabilisation measure can be applied to slopes with more than 25m height if proper and systematic design procedures are adhered. Generally, the minimum factor of safety (FOS) required depend on the codes or requirements accepted by the local authority. In Malaysia, the reference will be made to the recommendations of Geotechnical Engineering Office Hong Kong (GEOHK) or by the Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR). As the transition to adopt Eurocodes is occurring gradually in our country, certain projects may require the design to be compliant to Eurocodes 7 (EC7). However, the developed EC7 is not intended for reinforced soil design and the there are differences between partial factors adopted by BS8006 and EC7(Malaysian annex) for slope that results in various implications. Hence, these uncertainties need to be understood and examined before a recommendation can be made for Malaysian context. Numerical modelling using Slide2 software will be used to model a soil nailed slope as a case study for this project. Prerequisites (Modules followed, Programming skills, Soft skills, etc) Theory of slope stability and relevant geotechnical design codes. Research Questions: 1. How different are the final EC7 and BS 8006 compliant designs to that of the conventional method? 2. How the partial factors influence the soil nailed slope analysis and design? 3. What is the appropriate design parameters in Malaysian context? Project Objectives: 1. To understand the design philosophies and methods for soil nailed slope design by conventional method, EC7 and BS 8006. 2. To evaluate the sensitivity of non-fixed partial factors to the analyses based on the conventional design method. 3. To propose appropriate values of partial factors for soil nailed slope design within Malaysian context. Resources Required Online articles, relevant standards and guidelines, Rocscience software. Is the existing facilities in the school sufficient to carry out this project work? Yes Does the student need special training to use any lab equipment? No If yes, how will this be provided? Budget (Please list down the equipment or items to purchase accordingly) No Do you have any external financial assistance to support this work? No
