Ethical and Professional Aspects of Business and Management

Business is one of the most common terms to cross across in a person’s life. Each one of them has either been a part of the business or have heard this name in their lifetime. Business is a process that involves numerous other processes. It is also defined as an enterprise working together in commercial, professional or industrial activities. Businesses can either be for-profit or non-profit organizations. The liabilities in businesses may range from corporations, sole proprietorship, partnerships, and liability companies as well. The aim of the business is to determine how profit can be obtained by the activities which are performed. The majority of the business giants nowadays have started with scratch. It is their determination and persistence in the field of business and their ability to make the right decisions for the organization that have made them what they are today. Some examples of the biggest entrepreneur of all time are- Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs and many more.

However, only perseverance and hard work does not help the businesses to stand out in the future. It is proper management of such business which helps the businessmen to succeed in their strategies and steps in the businesses. Management of a business is regarded as the administration and coordination of the tasks or activities that are to be performed in the businesses such that the business goals and objectives can be achieved in the future. The function of management is inclusive of preparing a plan, organization of staff, directing or leading the employees towards achievement of the goals for the organization, and many more. In other words, management is regarded as a group of people who oversees other groups of people in an organization such that the function and operations of the organization are maintained and the goals and objectives of the organization are met. However, other aspects must be taken into consideration while handling businesses and that is Ethics and Professionalism. These are the two most important supporting pillars for the organizations that have established a business. Ethical behaviour is extremely important for making proper decisions on behalf of the organization. an ethically strong organization is more likely to make the right decision which in turn shall attract more employees and customers to the organization. Ethics in business practices help in the demonstration of fairness, honesty, dignity, individual rights and diversity. Professionalism on the other hand as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary is "the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person"; and it defines a profession as "a calling requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation." There is the various quality of being a professional in the field of business. A professional in a business is not the one who knows it all. It is the one who knows their jobs better. They are the ones who the organization can look up to for any solution or decision. A professional should be the one who abides by all the aforementioned ethical aspects of the business. After completion of the assessment, the students shall be able to understand and determine the importance of maintaining ethics and professionalism in business practices and the ways in which this can help in enhancing it even further. Location: University of Sussex, Sussex, United Kingdom Study level: Masters Unit code: BUS4002

As mentioned before, ethics and professionalism are the two most important pillars of establishing a proper business and maintaining decorum as well. ethics and professionalism in business help in gathering more employees within the organizations. This is mainly because better ethics helps in delivering better work processes and policies. This helps the employees to stand a chance and deliver work as per their best efforts. Numerous organizations fail to maintain ethics and professionalism in the work processes which leads to chaos and pandemonium. Initially, it may seem that the work process is fine, but with time the employees and stakeholders start losing faith in the company. Portraying professionalism in the workplace is showing respect to each one of the stakeholders who are present in the workplace. Listening to a person when they are talking, taking their ideas into consideration, making alterations for the betterment of the organization and their people and many more contributes to the professionalism within an organization. Answer the following set of questions to demonstrate your understanding of the importance of ethics and professionalism in a business environment. Question 1: What are the key elements of maintaining professionalism in a workplace or in a business environment? Who can be regarded as a true professional? Why is it essential to maintain professionalism in business? What is the difference between management and leadership? Who among them should be more ethically inclined? If both, then explain why? Question 2: What are the major ethical considerations which should be implemented in a working environment? With an example from real-life case studies, identify a case where ethics have been tattered and determine the ethical considerations which could have saved the day. The following sections mention a few important guidelines which help in completing the assessment with effectiveness.

The assessment is for making the students acquainted with the ethical considerations for the businesses and management, such that they can show their abilities to develop themselves in business and management sectors with knowledge of ethics and professionalism in future. The overall per cent allotted by the assessment is 40. There are two main questions that have subparts. Each of them consists of 20 marks. Both the questions are descriptive and the students shall portray their knowledge and understanding of the subjects for future applications. Plagiarism is one of the major concerns of the university. Each student must submit their TURN IT IN reports to the organizations for checking the plagiarism count which shall be not more than 9 per cent. Harvard or IEEE referencing format shall be used for referencing the documents. There must be 10 references provided for the solutions to the questions. The assignment word count should be 2000 without the list of references.
