Contemporary Marxian Theory on Social Reproduction, Super-Exploitation, Finance Capital, Rent, and S

Three important strands of contemporary Marxian thought

In part three of this course we turn to three contemporary strands of Marxian theory, in the form of (1) social reproduction theory, (2) work around the concept super-exploitation, and (3) finance capital, rent, and the distribution of surplus. Each of these strands of thought brings out important aspects of life under capital today. In this assignment you can choose to discuss all of these strands or to focus on one or two of these. If you are doing the latter then you will need to engage in deeper study and extended readings reflecting that focus. Whichever your focus, you must attend all of the lectures and must read all of the set readings, as these three strands of contemporary Marxian thought cannot be taken in isolation from one another. The goal of this third writing assignment is to reflect on the operation of capital today, and in doing so to be clear about how Marx’s thought can be relevant but also can need extending to speak to the realities of capital today. Success in this assignment will therefore require you to revise parts one and two of this course and to engage in depth with the content of part three. Feel free to use examples to make your argument. This might be through the use of particular examples to illustrate general arguments, or by identifying an example, explaining this example briefly in one paragraph and then unpicking the example with the use of course readings and content from the lectures. It should be noted that for Marx critical analysis is never a matter of simply pointing out how bad things are but rather of identifying the antagonisms and struggles immanent to the present. For this assignment, therefore, you will be invited to attune yourself to the dynamics not only of the domination by capital but also to see the ways in which capital is always being contested.
