The basic element of understanding sentence construction and the most important aspect of writing an incorrect sentence is to understand the concept of Subject and Predicate. Subject and Predicate are the most basic thing of English Grammar, and the primary learning one must know.
The Subject in a complete sentence is basically who or what, the sentence is about, and everything the sentence tells about this “who” or “what”, is referred as the Predicate. For example,
“The cat is sitting on the mattress.”
Here, the sentence tells about a cat, who is sitting on a mattress. Therefore, upon questioning with a “Who”, or a “What”, we get the answer, “Cat”. Therefore, the Cat is the subject of the sentence. Further, the sentence talks about the cat, that is, “sitting on a mattress”. This is the Predicate part of the sentence. Therefore, it can be stated that the Subject is the Noun part of a sentence.
Let’s take another example. “The cat is siting on the mattress, coiling its body like a big, soft, sponge.”
This sentence is more detailed in its orientation, but still talks about the Cat. If again the question is asked with a “Who” or a “What”, then, the answer would remain the same. However, the sentence is more detailed, and talks about the cat only, so therefore, all that it talks about the cat, is included into Predicate.
One important point that must be considered or rather remembered, is that, the question should be asked to the verb of the sentence. That is, “Who is sitting?” or “What is sitting?” Therefore, to understand the Subject and the Predicate part of the question, it is important, or rather necessary to find out the verb of the Sentence. Sometimes, it is believed that the Subject will always sit at the start of any sentence, but this is a wrong notion. Subject can be in the middle or at the end of the sentence as well, however, it is likely to sit at the start of a sentence.
However, as can be understood from the definitions, there are certain differences between the Subject and the Predicate of a sentence, and these essentially are,
® The Subject is what or whom the sentence talks about, while Predicate is whatever the sentence talks about this What or Whom.
® To understand the Subject, one must determine the verb of the sentence, and to understand the Predicate, one must determine the Subject of the sentence.
® The idea of the Subject is different in an imperative sentence, than a conventional sentence. However, there is no such differences found while determining the Predicate of a sentence.
There are two important points to remember, while determining Subject and Predicate of a sentence.
ü One, “There”, is never a subject. And,
ü Two, in case of an Imperative sentence, the subject is always, “You”, and sometimes, “One”.
