Détente is defined as the French word which means releasing from tension is the name given to the period of improved relationships between United States as well as Soviet Union which began tentatively in the year 1971 and it helped in taking decisive actions and form.  Détente is the process of easing of the different strained relations especially in the political situation through the help of the verbal communication.

In practical terms, Détente led to formal kind of agreements on the control of arms as well as security of Europe. Moreover, the breakdown of Détente in late 1970s helped in stalling progress on the control of arms. By the end of 1960s, Soviet Union as well as United States agreed the policy of Détente and it helped in the reduction in hostility. However, it did not resolve the different tensions in a complete manner, it helped in signaling relaxation of the cold war tensions and it assisted in bringing new spirit of cooperation.

Between the late 1960s and late 1970s, there was thawing of ongoing Cold War between United States and Soviet Union and during the respective phase, Détente took several forms which includes increased discussion on the arms control. Détente tried to ease the cold war tensions between USA and Soviet Union from 1967 to 1979 and the main goal of Détente was to continue to resist and deter Soviet adventurism along with striving for the constructive relations with Communist world.

During the period of Détente, the conscious attempt was being made by USSR and USA which helped in reducing the tension related areas. It helped in preventing further escalation of cold war and to attempt overall development of the friendly cooperation as well as collaboration in the bilateral relationships. The respective development came to be popularity which was named as Détente. Furthermore, the Détente was quite successful in ending new cold war in the international relations and it assisted in producing welcome change in the international system and within the four years of the emergence, the entire world was successful in expressing new faith in the peace as well as peaceful co-existence in the international relations. The new Détente helped in generating humankind which helped in coming out of the jaws of new cold war and get ushered in peace and prosperity.

After remaining engaged in Cold War relationships between 1945 to 1970, USSR and USA were involved in Détente during the era of 1970s. However, there were different kinds of issues which were raising in international relations and it affected the overall peaceful environment negatively. However, with the help of Détente, there was dilution of cold war between USSR and USA. In addition, the progress of the Détente led to improved and proper harmony between the countries and it led to almost the end of the cold war. The success of the new Détente manifested in the year 1990  with the final end to the cold war in the international relations and helped in solving the different issues in a positive manner.
