For the importance of understanding any field, it is an important aspect to have a strong foundation which will contribute towards the growth. For the field of visual art, this refers to the important need of understanding the Elements of Art. These refer to a set of creative building blocks which are an essential part and have a grasp upon these is important for an artist to love their work. Having a deeper knowledge regarding the elements of art, it is a much more easier to analyze, unravel and to ensure creation of any type of work ranging from painting to photography to sculpture as well as architecture.
As a matter of fact, many of these elements of art are been taught to schoolchildren as a part of their syllabus down the art education. The concepts might be simple, but once reached at a level of mastery this knowledge of the elements can stretch and grow to different directions ignoring the fact regarding the style of art which is being created or appreciated. These elements of art hold a strong visual component that work in coalition with the various principals of art that have an organization and harmony attached to them.
Line, color, shape, form, space, value and texture are the seven primary elements of art and they often tend to overlap and be informative to each other. Be it for drawing, painting, sculpture or design, these elements of art need to be taken into consideration. Once all of these elements are within the grip of an artist, it is considered to be much easier to create art.
The elements of the art in detail are,
i) Line- this marks a span of distance between tow specific points and can be either straight or curved. In the field of visual art, it is not a necessity for the lines to be made with only the usage of marks and outlines. Be the artwork a two-dimensional or a three-dimensional figure, every piece of art includes the implementation of lines, hence the impact of lines on every piece of artwork has a huge impact from the initiation to the end. The lines can be implemented to give a shape or form to the art, along with the fact that lines also provide depth and structure to the given piece of art. Lines define themselves as a powerful tool contributing towards the foundation of drawing. The different types of lines are- continuous, broken, vertical, jagged and horizontal.
ii) Color- hue, value and intensity are the basic three building blocks of the color with the help of which the artists showcase a wide variety of emotions. There is no existence other than a color which can have an emotional impact other than a color within an artwork. Artists like Van Gogh, Monet and Toulouse Lautrec are the experts who have implemented color in their respective artworks to have highlighted different emotions and feelings. Color within an artwork can be implemented in a symbolic way or maybe on the other hand to create a pattern. Having a deeper knowledge about the color theory, provide a helping hand to the artists to implement colors in a far better way in case of art.
iii) Shape- these are the result of closed lines, which give rise to two-dimensional figure which are flat and only possess the property of having only height and weight. Geometric shapes such as that of circles and squares always abide by the rules of mathematics and precise, while on the other hand organic shapes extract cues from the nature around and tend to have a curved and an abstract shape. Henri Matisse’s art regarding the collage great implementation of organic shapes. On the other hand, Piet Mondrian is renowned for relying upon the geometric shapes within his paintings. Shapes provision for the perception of a particular composition.
iv) Form- the time when a shape acquires depth and takes the form of a three-dimensional shape. The most common forms of these three-dimensional shapes are cylinders, pyramids and spheres which also contain the ability to become amorphous. In case of sculptures, form is considered to be one of the most important aspect that can be easily implemented into drawing and painting utilizing the 3D techniques of art. Form also plays one of the major part in the field of architecture as well.
v) Value- this is the term which is related to the lightness and darkness of a color entirely. The light value of the color is white, and the darkest value being that of black. The difference between the lightest and the darkest color is commonly referred to as the contrast. Playing with the value can change the form as well as the mood of the artwork.
vi) Space- this particular element of art can be manipulated on the basis of how an artist utilizes the existence of lines, shapes, forms and colors within their artwork. Space depends upon the fact that how these elements are being placed in the piece of art. Positive space is the referred to the space which is occupied by an object while the negative space is the term which is given to the space that runs between the objects.
vii) Texture- this is the element in an artwork that plays the part in creating a sense of touch. It also carries the definition of how something feels or looks like it would feel on being touched. Half of the times, it is discussed about a texture which can be felt such as in the case of Icelandic artist Hrafnhildur Arnardottir, who mainly creates installation art with the use of synthetic hair. And, at other times, the texture carries the feature of an implied visual texture that is two-dimensional. Smooth, rough, soft, fluffy, hard and bumpy are some of the different textures that imply towards different responses. Antonio Canova, who was a great sculptor in the 19th century was a master of this, as evident from his portrait of Napoleon’s sister in which she was resting herself on a cushion which seemed so soft and touchable, that is was almost impossible to believe upon the fact that the artwork was done on marble.
