The air that is rich in oxygen gets travelled down to the trachea and then to one of the lungs with the help of the either right or left bronchus. From this point the air gets directed through bronchioles which are smaller passages and then passes to the alveolar duct finally reaching to the individual alveolus. At this point the molecules of oxygen get diffused into a single cell within the alveolus and again into a single cell in the capillary while entering into the bloodstream. During this time, the CO2 molecules are left as a byproduct of the respiration in the cells and get diffused back into the alveolus where they get expelled out from the body via nose or mouth. During the process of inhalation, the capillaries get expanded due to the negative pressure within the chest as a result of the contraction of the diaphragm. These alveoli get recoiled back when the diaphragm relaxes.
The alveolar sacs are defined as small chambers of pulmonary tissue that are located at the very end of the alveolar duct from where the smaller sacs called the alveoli gets projected from the alveolar sacs. The alveoli are located in the lungs where most of the exchange of gases occurs. The air gets travelled from the bronchioles into the alveolar ducts and then into the alveolar sac where it again gets distributed to the projecting alveoli’s from the alveolar sac. At the end of each bronchiole, a special area gets lead to the clump of the tiny air sacs called alveoli. There are about 600 million alveoli present in human lungs that get stretched out. Each of the alveolus has a cover of a mesh of very small blood vessels known as capillaries.
