Jonathan Edwards was a philosopher, Protestant theologian, philosopher and revivalist preacher from America. Edwards played a very important role in shaping the First Great Awakening. Jonathan Edwards is considered as the most important philosophical theologians of America. Edwards work of theology had various opportunities but it was deeply rooted in the Reformed theology. Jonathan Edwards has grounded the works of his life on conception of harmony, ethics and beauty. He has always focused on enlightenment. His work of theology has given rise to a school of theology which is known as the New England theology. Jonathan Edwards delivered a classic American literature known as the ‘Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” followed by the George Whitefield’s tour of the Thirteen Colonies. He is well-known for many of his books like ‘The End For Which God Created the World’, ‘The Life of David Brainerd’ which has inspired hundreds and thousands of missionaries in the 19th century. He was trained by all his elders’ sisters and his father. He entered Yale college in the year 1716 at the age of 13. In the year 2014, he became acquainted with John Locke’s Essay Concerning Human Understanding which has highly influenced him. During his school days, he had planned for a work in mental and natural philosophy. He showed immense interest in natural history and at the age of 11, he wrote an essay that spoke about the ballooning behaviour of some spiders. He would edit this essay in order to match the burgeoning genre of the scientific literature. Jonathan Edwards after starting the presidency at the College of New Jersey died from the disease smallpox inoculation. He was the grandfather of Aaron Burr who was the third Vice President of the United States.
In the 18th century, life in America was changing. As people from Britain moved from Britain to America, the British colonies of Massachusetts and Connecticut was becoming over populated. Thus, more people led to more luxuries in the country. In the midst of America’s changing, Jonathan Edwards became a well-known philosopher and minister of the emerging colonies. He also became the founder of the religious revival movement in the mid of 1700s, known as the Great Awakening. In between 1720s and 1730s, Jonathan Edwards became worried about people of the colonies losing their focus from God. He thought that the colonial people were getting distracted by the luxuries of the world which became more powerful and strengthened as new traders and colonists moved to Massachusetts and Connecticut more regularly. He thus, to increase awareness, became the central figure in order to encourage and revive the religious beliefs in the people of America. During this time, he has delivered the most famous sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. In the midst of the Great Awakening, Jonathan Edwards stood in front of a congregation in Enfield and gave a speech that has become famous as the Great Awakening sermon and one of the most popular sermons in the American history. The congregation reacted to his speech with passion and was well-interrupted by the audience as they asked questions of they will be saved. Edwards wondered about the propriety and value of such heated scenes and he would also spend much time and effort trying to craft a rubric in order to awaken the citizen. In the late 1740s the Great Awakening faced its greatest rise of revivals which was enhanced by the wandering preaching of the Anglican evangelist George Awakening. Historians have spoken about the significance of this Great Awakening. The Great Awakening has evolved people of the country as they started welcoming new lights of hope as a gift of God. The new lights could range from enthusiasm to cautious moderation. Jonathan Edwards also started questioning few of the incendiary practices of the radicals. By the mid of 1740s Jonathan Edwards has become more hesitant about these issues he once ventured into in Enfield.
