This assessment is a shortlisting exercise in which you will be required to take part in a selection process of reviewing and assessing potential candidates’ CVs and cover letters. Your lecture will act as the chair of the shortlisting panel. The purpose of shortlisting is to identify those candidates who best meet the selection criteria for the post; those most likely to be capable of carrying out the duties of the role; and about whom you wish to find out more information at formal interview.
For the shortlisting exercise, you will be required to assess candidate CV’s and cover letters. You will be given a selection of six different CV’s to analyse and provide the rationale for shortlisting candidates ranging, from the most suitable to the least suitable candidate, based solely on their applications. Specifically, you should be prepared to speak on the following:
1. Identify candidates who match the requirements for the role.
2. List candidates in order of preference for interview justifying your choice by explaining your rationale.
3. Identify any concerns or incomplete career histories on candidate applications.
4. Identify candidates that are completely unsuitable for the role.
5. Identify the limitations of CVs as a selection method.
6. Comply with legislation such as the Equality Act 20103
Mark
Marks will be awarded on an individual basis. Participants will be scored out of 100, which will be broken down as follows:
Professional conduct 10 Marks
Demonstration of knowledge 45 Marks
Ability to analyse CVs and justify choices 45 Marks
Total: 100 Marks
You are expected to demonstrate a clear and deep understanding of shortlisting and assessing the suitability of candidate CV and cover letter for a role evaluating the essential and desired skills of a CV and cover letter.
This is a formal shortlisting of candidates meetings. The Lecturer will invite each presenter to respond to specific questions about the allocated candidates for a job.
When invited to speak, each student will have no more than 5 minutes to deliver his or her response. This time limit will apply each time that any presenter is invited to speak by the lecturer If any presenter exceeds this time, the lecturer will stop that presenter. Thus, you should focus and be precise when asked any question by the lecture.
As professionals, you are expected to dress smartly for the shortlisting meeting and act with confidence and credibility by ensuring that you maintain eye contact with the chair of the meeting. You are expected to present your findings at an appropriate volume, with clarity and maintain professional body language during the meeting.
As this is a professional shortlisting meeting, students are expected to arrive at least 10 minutes before the scheduled start time. Students who are late for the start of their scheduled time will lose 5 of the marks awarded for professionalism or may not be allowed to take part in the shortlisting meeting if such lateness exceeds 10 minutes after the scheduled slot/time. Also, students that fail to attend their slot will fail the assessment. All meetings will take place within scheduled teaching hours for the module or during scheduled assessment periods as dictated by the Faculty Office.
