LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT Name of the Student Name of the University Author Note Aims and Objectives Aim : The primary aim of this research paper is to study the role of inventory management in UK supermarkets . Objectives : To investigate as to how does the management take important decisions relating to the capital investment in inventory of the UK supermarkets . To study about the risks which are associated with the scenario of stock -outs and its impact on the performance of the UK supermarkets . To investigate into the relationship between the automation of the inventory management including the use of ERP, performance and the profitability of the UK supermarkets . Work Carried Out Research Philosophy : Interpretivist philosophy having an Epistemology characteristics . Research Approach : Deductive approach of research has been adopted . Research Design : Exploratory design of research has been adopted . Work Carried Out Data Collection Method : Primary data has been collected from 50 respondents working in different managerial positions in big five supermarket chains of UK in the form of Semi -structured questionnaires . Sampling and Sample Size : Simple Random Sampling method has been to deduce a sample size of 50 respondents has been selected form a population of 200 respondents . Data Analysis Plan : Data analysis has been carried on using a renowned and trust -worthy statistical tool, SPSS . Key Outcomes The Exploratory Analysis shows that most of the respondents are male, working in Co -op Foods and have experience of more than 10 Years The Descript ive statist ics has been conducive in illustrating how the respondents have strongly a greed for automation of the inventory management, use of ERP in their workplace, Inventory performance measures, Capital invest ment in inventory being long -term strategy of the business and capital invest ment in inventory is based on projected increase in sales The descriptive statist ics also states that most of the data is negatively skewed or skewed to the left of the bell -shaped curve The ma in outcome of the Correlations Matrix explains that there does not exist strong positive correlation among the independent variables such as automation of the inventory management, use of ERP and Inventory performance measures with the dependent variable The depiction of regression analysis further suggest that automation of the inventory management, use of ERP and inventory performance measures has been only able to explain profit up to 1.7% . The research is unable to re ject the null hypothesis, as the ANOVA is more than 0.05 , thereby not able to find any statist ical significance on the impact of inventory performance measure, inventory automation and use of ERP on profit of the supermarkets in the UK . The collinearity diagnostics suggests there does not exist any collinearity among the selected variables . Key Outcomes The data analysis is unable to find any direct relationship of automation of the inventory management, use of ERP and inventory performance The find ings of RO 1- To investigate as to how does the management take important decis ions relatin g to the cap ital investment in inventory of the UK supermarkets has shown that cap ital investment in inventory is primarily seen in the areas of long -term strategy of the business, projected increase in sales, improvin g the cash flow performance, generating positive return on investment and improvin g the capacity of the firm’s bottleneck operation The key outcome pertainin g to RO 2 - To study about the risks wh ich are associated with the scenario of stock -outs and its impact on the performance of the UK supermarkets is evident with poor staff morale, poor customer satisfaction, inaccurate reporting and failure to reorder in a timely manner . T he most frequently reported risk associated with stock -out can be identified with failure to reord er the inventory in a timely manner The key depictions of RO 3 - To investigate into the relationship between the automation of the inventory management includ ing the use of ERP and performance and profitab ility of the UK supermarkets can be seen with having statistically insignificant result .
