Designing a COVID lockdown application for elderly people

This assignment is an INDIVIDUAL piece of work that is split into two parts:

In Part 1 you are required to solve the design problem set out below using the following user centred design techniques:

  • Personas
  • Scenarios
  • Storyboards
  • Prototyping

The form of submission will be a document containing all the artefacts listed above and a video presentation of up to 10 minutes.

In part 2 you are required to reflect on, and critique, one method from the design process. The form of submission is a written report of 500 words.

Tasks and Submissions:

THE BRIEF: You are required to design a prototype application to assist elderly people staying in contact with their family during a COVID lockdown.

Part 1: Design work (submitted as a document) and video (10 mins maximum) carries 70% of the mark for the assignment and consists of the evidence of appropriate utilisation of methods and an individual presentation. Design work - you need to provide the following artefacts in this document.

  • 2 personas related to the design brief
  • 2 scenarios (1 for each persona)
  • 2 storyboards (1 for each persona)
  • Prototypes (evidence of prototypes – these could include sketches, wireframes, mock-ups)

The artefact themselves are enough, you do not need to add any further explanation. This should be done in the video presentation.

Video presentation – you need to produce a presentation that lasts a maximum of 10 minutes where you describe the design process you went through. This will be similar to the presentations you did for the original assignment. The video should include:

  • A presentation of your work (using PowerPoint or similar)
  • All the artefacts produced in the design work
  • Explanation and justification of the artefacts and the final design

Part 2: Project report (500 words) carries 30% of the mark for the assignment, and it consists of a critique of one of the design methods used.

  • Using academic literature to support your arguments, write a critique of ONE user centred design method that you employed during the design process (personas, scenarios, storyboarding, prototyping). Introduce the method, consider how the method contributed to your design solution, and, the benefits and drawbacks of using the method in the design process. The mark scheme for this assignment can be found at the end of this document.
  • The lecture and tutorial materials from week 1 to week 5 are to be used as preparation for this assignment.
  • Academic papers on the main user centred design methods that you will be using in this assignment have been provided on Blackboard.

Grading Criteria / Mark Scheme

  1. You must have submitted all the requirements for part 1 and part 2 of the assignment (design work, video presentation, project report).
  2. Satisfactorily completed ALL of the design activities (2 personas, 2 scenarios, 2 storyboards, evidence of prototypes).
  3. Presented a suitable design solution.
  4. Evidenced some appropriateness of the artefacts to the design brief.
  5. Demonstrated some ability to critique a user centred design method.
  6. Reflected on a design method. To obtain 60% (Merit), in addition to the above, you must have:
  7. Provide evidence of further requirements analysis in your video presentation (market research etc).
  8. All personas, scenarios and storyboards well considered in relation to the brief.
  9. Demonstrated a good ability to critique a user centred design method.
  10. Used references from the literature to reflect on a design method used. To obtain 70% (Distinction), in addition to the above, you must have:
  11. Completed all of the design activities to a high standard of competence.
  12. Evidenced evolution of your prototypes.
  13. Presented a well informed design demonstrating good communication skills.
  14. Used seminal references to reflect on the design process. To obtain 80% (High Distinction), in addition to the above, you must have:
  15. Completed all of the design activities to a professional standard.
  16. Provide extra artefacts on top of those required for a pass.
  17. Excellent communication skills demonstrated in the presentation.
  18. Used seminal references from a variety of sources to reflect on the design process.
