The brachioradialis muscle is a muscle that is situated in the forearm of human body which helps in the flexibility of the forearm at the point of elbow. The muscle helps on the pronation and supination, which are anatomical terms related to special movements of forearm so that the palm can be faced anteriorly or posteriorly. It is attached to the bone which is a projected laterally on the surface of the distal radial bone. This bone is also referred to as styloid process.

The brachioradialis muscle is attached to the projected bone with the help of brachioradialis tendon and also to the lower part of the lateral border of the humerus which is a prominent, rough and little curved margin. This margin is referred to as lateral supracondylar ridge.

The brachioradialis muscle being attached to the forearm travels all along the length of the forearm. The muscle forms the end of the pit of the elbow laterally. For the movement of the oxygenated blood, the brachioradialis muscle functions with the help of radial recurrent artery. This artery splits off its branches at the point just below the elbow. The radial artery is the head artery from which the radial recurrent artery separates out as one of its branches. The radial nerve supplies this muscle with nerves and the muscle shares this nerve with triceps, anconeus andextensis carpi radialislongus muscle.

There are many important functions of brachioradialis muscle. The primary function among them is the movement of the forearm. The brachioradialis muscle flexes contrary to that of the forearm. This means when the forearm pronates the muscles supinates and vice-versa. This automatically helps in the movement of biceps brachii, which is a large muscle located in the upper arm in between the shoulder and the elbow.

This muscle functions strongly by being a flexor even when the forearm takes a position in between pronation and supination. This position generally happens at the radioulnarjoint which is the joint between the circumference of the head of the radius and the ring structure formed between the radial notch of the ulna and the ligament. When the forearm pronates the biceps brachiicannot function properly due to its mechanical disadvantage. In such a situation this muscle comes into play for the elbow flexion.

The brachioradialis muscle cannot produce rotations forcibly like the brachialis or the biceps when there is muscle insertion at a far distance from the fulcrum of the elbow. It can only function effectively when the muscles have already been partially flexed. The muscle helps in the flexibility of the forearm in specific situations such as quick movements or if there is lifting of weight during slow flexion of the forearm.

Another important function of the brachioradialis muscle is that it helps in the stabilisation of the elbow whenever there is any rapid movement. It also helps in the extension of the elbow while the elbow is in the mid-position. This situation may arise while hammering. Brachoradialis muscle works in synergy with brachialis and biceps brachii.
