New Mexico is situated in the North Western Hemisphere, beside the United States of America. Although being so closely located near the most powerful nation state of the world with a capitalist market order, New Mexico is anything but like the United States. This country has a lot of natural wonders which makes it one of the most attractive tourist places in the world. This territory has been termed as the “Land of Enchantment”.

Among the wonders of New Mexico, one of the wonders is that of the Chaco Canyon. Chaco Canyon is a part of the Chaco Culture National Historical Park which is located within New Mexico. It is considered to be one of the most enchanting archeological locations of the realm. The Park is filled with many ancient ruins dating as far back as the pre-Columbian culture of the world. Chaco Canyon became a famous place in between 900 and 1150 AD. It was made famous by the Ancestral Puebloans.

The Chacoans were famous for the quarrying of blocks of sandstones over large distances. Furthermore, there has also been evidences that in the Chaco culture, there existed hints of archaeoastronomy. One popular example of this was the petroglyph near the Fajada Butte, called as the “Sun Dagger”. A major contribution of the Chacoan culture to the land of New Mexico was that there are many structures of Chaco which were constructed with the aim of capturing the lunar and the solar cycles. This again hinted at the existence of many years of skillful observations of astronomy.

It is all these unique features of the Chacoan culture which has made the region of the Chaco cultural park and canyon a famous site in the world. The canyon of Chaco is located in the San Juan Basin of New Mexico. Surrounding this canyon, there re different kinds of trees such as pine, oak, juniper and pinon. These trees were planted by the ancient Chacoans so that they would be able to derive important timber and other forest materials from them in order to ensure their survival. The canyon also has several aquifers which could not be used by the ancient Chacoans as they were too deep. However, in the modern world, such aquifers are made use of by the people of the surrounding society.

Thus, the Chaco canyon stands out as one of the most spectacular wonders within the land of New Mexico because of the rich cultural past that is associated with it. Many tribes of New Mexico had been able to survive within this region. Furthermore, the canyon is surrounded by a lot of forests and natural resources which makes it one of the most attractive places in the world. The canyon also has a rich scientific past as the people who lived here built marvelous buildings and structures which are astronomically quite significant. This shows how forward thinking the society of Chaco was.
