Describe The Term Internal Conflict In Detail

Referencing Styles : APA | Pages : 1

Internal conflict is a significant term and phenomena in psychology. The term ‘internal conflict’ can be defined as the struggle that occurs within the mind of an individual or a character due to opposing impulses or demands. It generally arises for the things that an individual or the character looks out for but cannot quite reach that. Internal conflict also refers to the dilemma of a person originates due to some ethical, moral or emotional question. It can also result in the issues related to decision making. In the internal conflict, a person or a character usually asks self-retrospective questions to evaluate his doings or thoughts and address the dilemmas. Internal conflicts are major factors that can hamper the peace of mind of an individual and that in turn affect the daily lifestyle negatively.

In the field of psychology, internal conflict refers to the experience of opposite desires, psychological beliefs, feelings or impulses. Internal conflict is also referred to as ‘cognitive dissonance’ which implies the concept of holding various inconsistent and conflicting beliefs, attitudes and thoughts, which results in mental struggle for an individual or a character. This mental struggle can happen over any aspect, such as, work commitments, relationships, social ideologies, religious beliefs and moral standpoints and at any point in life.

The issue of internal conflict can be explained with the following examples. An individual believes in the rights of women’s and women empowerment, but does not accept or support abortion and it reflects internal conflict. Similarly, internal conflicts often arise in the religious world, when an individual is faced with a teaching or doctrine outside his beliefs and he does not feel comfortable in propagating that.

There are various reasons that lead to internal conflict for a person or a character. It is the struggle between what a person knows and what he feels. Disagreement between heart and head of a person results in internal conflict. In the field of psychology, various research works were done to assess the issue of internal conflicts, their characteristics and impacts. It has been found that hearts of the individuals carry a special type of intuitive intelligence. The societies across the world are dominated by mind and hence, in matters that involve the heart or the emotions often lead to internal conflicts for people. Individuals can easily obey the teachings of the societies and can follow the lifestyle according to the society’s rules. However, the heart contains a special type of intelligence, which is considered as subtle, non-linear and mostly abstract, and it cannot be defined using any formula, and this intelligence is one of the primary reasons for causing internal conflicts for people.

The intelligence of the brain helps people to give a structure and direction of lives and make a proper plan and implement that to live their lives in a systematic manner. On the other hand, the emotions and intelligence of the heart create a soul for the journeys of life for every individual on the planet. Without the heart’s intelligence and emotions, the journey of life would be soulless and unfulfilling, similarly, without mind’s intelligence or intervention, there would be no control on life. Hence, a balance between the two is extremely necessary. Individuals need to consider the intelligence of both heart and mind to lead a balanced and systematic life, however, often situation arises that creates a struggle as well as confusion between heart and mind and thereby internal conflict arises. Thus, it can be said that internal conflict arises as people lack equanimity as well as balance between the heart and the head and when the actions do not match the values, the feeling of discomfort, violation of morality and ideologies arise, resulting in dilemma, confusion and internal struggle.

There are various different types of internal conflicts, among which 8 are most common, such as, moral conflict, sexual conflict, religious conflict, political conflict, love conflict, self-image conflict, interpersonal conflict, and existential conflict.

  • Moral conflict emerges when people hold contradictory beliefs regarding something related to personal ethics. For example, when a person propagates about individual human rights but does not support euthanasia, moral conflict arises. Moral conflict is one of the most common types of conflicts that are observed most often.
  • Sexual conflicts are usually related to the sexual orientation and preference of people and they usually overlap with other type of conflicts, such as, religious conflicts. For example, an individual might be a faithful Christian, but he is also homosexual as per his or her sexual orientation. This creates a big challenge as sexual conflict. Similarly, sexual conflicts arise when a person with traits of polygamous relationships must follow a monogamous relationship due to the norms of the society.
  • Religious conflicts are very common in the societies. It revolves around the beliefs and these beliefs are absolutely mind-oriented, which makes these fragile. For example, a person can be highly religious but still can believe in the usage of medical marijuana, which is considered as a drug opposing the religious belief.
  • Political beliefs arise when there is a difference between the beliefs of an individual and that of a political party. For example, an individual can support a political party but may not agree with their healthcare support system.
  • Love conflict arises in relationships in which an individual loves another person but still would do something to hurt the other person.
  • Self-image conflict arises from the idea that one holds about oneself. For instance, a person who takes pride in healthy eating might not want to quit smoking although he knows that smoking is harmful.
  • Interpersonal conflict is mostly observed in social gatherings when people want to be in their own way but due to social norms, they have to act in a different way. Suppose a person in not interested in sports, but as his co-workers talk about it, the person needs to show fake interest in sports.
  • Lastly, existential conflicts arise from the confusion and feelings of discomfort about one’s life when two contradictory beliefs or desire arise.

Thus, it can be said that all types of internal conflicts can overlap frequently with one another and create a mental struggle for the individuals.
