Summary /Purpose One of the first steps in applying a cultural proficiency framework and understanding the needs of the Indigenous community is taking some time to reflect on your own culture and the important and critical milestones that have shaped you and your family.

This assessment is designed to achieve this aim and in doing so you to begin to address the following learning outcomes

1.Identify historical and cultural factors which contribute to the context of indigenous health care problems

2.Demonstrate cultural sensitivity in all aspects of indigenous health practice and culturally appropriate research in indigenous populations Review the impact of historical events

3.Apply a cultural proficiency framework for working with indigenous populations Assignment Details:

In the first part you are asked to reflect on 3 moments in your own personal history where an event or experience reflecting the social determinants of health changed the focus of your health and life opportunities. Find 3 images or photos that illustrate the nominated events. As part of your reflection, we require you to look at the historical, social-political and cultural factors that influenced the events using evidence. Finally we then want you to locate the time in history that your event occurred and reflect on the historical factors that would impact on an Indigenous person. Assessment Criteria You will be assessed on your ability to:

1.Identify historical and cultural factors which contribute to the context of indigenous health care problems Review the impact of historical events

2.Describe the impact of contemporary society and culture on the health of Indigenous Australians Identify the key health issues that face Indigenous Australians in 21st century Australia
