Summary About The Book: The Picture Of Dorian Gray

The picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde is a novel that is based upon philosophy mainly published on July 1890. The Gothic and philosophical novel was first issued with Lippincott's Monthly Magazine and this was a shorter version which was later revised to a much longer version in the year 1891. The book was about a full length oil painting done by basil Hallward of the spectacularly handsome Dorian Gray. This artist was already infatuated by the beautiful face of Dorian Gray and in fact he also believed that the beauty of art has enhanced in him with the influence of his beauty. Dorian Gray was also mesmerized by the hedonistic worldview of aristocrat lord Henry Watton, whom he had met through you Basil. He was inspired by his idea that sensual fulfilment and outer beauty was the only thing people should pursue. However later he had understood that his beauty would fade with age. This thought made Dorian Gray extremely stricken with pain and decided to sell his soul. Following an incident involving a woman called Sybil, where an embarrassment had compelled Dorian to reject her, by which Dorian noticed that is portrait is transforming while he returned home, ensuring his wish to sell his soul and entrap it within his picture to remain forever young has come true. When Dorian was stricken with his own conscience of rejecting Sybil and tried to reconcile with her, it was too late as she had already committed suicide. At that point Dorian understood that his life would be e entrapped with last and beauty forever. In the course of time Dorian Gray gets into the path of debauchery, that slowly transforms the picture into a hideous structure, but even after years, Dorian remains the same beautiful and handsome person as he was several years back. When Basil understands this, he asks Dorian to you pray for his own salvation, but he denies all this and blames Basil behind everything, further killing him. After several years, where Dorian would have become old, he still was able to retain his face of a young man where the picture deteriorated with age. After several incidents when Dorian decided to follow the righteous path in his life, became romantically involved with Hetty Murton. Following his righteous path, Dorian wanted to see if his picture was reverted with his newfound goodness only to find it becoming much more hideous than before. He understood that full confession of his crimes in the past would resolve his wrongdoings, he was enraged and stabbed the picture. His servants came down when and they heard cries from a locked room only to find that in that room and old man and known to them have stabbed himself in the heart. The clothes and the rings on the corpse’s finger made the servant identify that it belong to Dorian Gray. Where on the other hand, the portrait was now restored displaying the incomparable former beauty of Dorian Gray in its original form as was made by Basil Hallward.
