The Catcher in the Rye is a story written by J.D. Salinger which was partially published in a serial form in the year 1945-1946 and as a novel in the year 1951. The story was originally intended for adults but is also read by young minds for its themes and alienation themes with a pinch of critique on the superficiality within the society. The story that is included within the novel included a sixteen year old boy named Holden Caulfield living in one of the unspecified institution in South California in the year 1951. The boy named Caulfield lives with his brother with whom Holden has some issues for becoming a screenwriter. The story begins at Pencey Preparatory Academy which is an exclusive boarding school at Pennsylvania. At the age of sixteen, Holden gets expelled from the school as a result of poor work and not returning in time after the Christmas break. After that Holden plans to return to his home and his parents receives his expulsion notice. The story tells about an incident where after forfeiting a fencing match Holden forgets his equipment’s on the subway and gets invited by his history teacher where he gets embarrassed based on his history work. In the entire story, Holden tells about the different situations making him finally undergo through a treatment in the mental hospital. After being mistreated by his history teacher, the next incident that is said within the story where Holden gets further irritated by his unhygienic neighbor at the dormitory. Holden’s roommate Stradlater dates a girl named Jane Gallagher whom Holden used to date and still admires. Gradually Holden becomes more aware and nervous about Stradlater taking out Jane and the timings when he returns back to the Dormitory. After a fight with his roommate, Holden decides to stay in a hotel by not telling his parents. Enrooting towards New York. Holden meets one of his classmate’s mother and distorts the truth of her son. The hotel in which Holden was staying faced towards the other wings of the hotel where he witnessed the behaviors of perverts and gradually he starts struggling with his own sexuality. In the hotel lounge, he meets three women with age thirty, who are from Seattle. He enjoys a dance with one of the women but ends up with only the check. Holden then tries to have a prostitute but finally making up excuses he pays the girl and asks her to leave. After that Holden calls up Sally Hayes for a familiar date and meets her that afternoon. Holden meanwhile leaves the hotel and checks out with his luggage t the Grand Central Station. There he meets with two nuns, where one of them is an English teacher. Holden discusses the story of Romeo and Juliet with her. After that Holden looks for his 10 years old sister Phoebe. Phoebe and Holden are close friends as well as siblings and expresses to her about his liking to be a Catcher in the Rye. The major theme that is reflected in the entire story is based on the Catcher in the Rye reflecting the values and motivation of the characters in the story. The theme of the story is based on protecting the innocence of children. The story that is described in the novel, is very much closely related to the struggle that he faced while growing up from his adolescence. The major enemy of Holden in the story is the adult world where Holden became a major part experiencing several situations. Another theme that is reflected in the story is death, where Holden got implied by the presence of his younger brother’s spirit even after his death after three years. The secret goal of Holden is to become a Catcher in the Rye which is a form of metaphor where he envies a field of rye standing by the end of a dangerous cliff. Holden shares his liking to be a catcher in the rye so that children who are plying in the field if comes too close to the edge of the cliff he would be there to catch them. However the entire story line seems to shift at the end of the chapter where Holden shifts his attitude and realizes that Phoebe his sister and other children like her must be allowed to choose their own risk while grabbing the gold ring even the attempt seems to be quite dangerous in reality.
