Task:
This problem builds on Problem 2 from Problem Set 5. The problem statement is repeated here the steps that are new for PS6 are in bold font. Turn in a print out of your complete spreadsheet that includes the models/graphs from PS5 with the additions identified in bold. Your problem solving strategy (equations and example calculations) only needs to include the parts that are new for this problem set.
A hydraulic study of the flow-through characteristics of a sedimentation basin was made using NaCl as a tracer by injecting a pulse input of salt at the inlet and measuring the salt concentration at the outlet. The results of the study are shown in the table below.
a) Plot c(t), E(t), and F(t) versus time. Estimate the value of based on these data.
b) Determine appropriate values of the model parameters for each of the following three models of the system.
(i) PFR with dispersion, for open boundaries
(ii) PFR with dispersion, for closed boundaries
(iii) N equal-sized CFSTRs in series
(iv) Six ideal PFRs in parallel. There are a wide variety of answers could be considered acceptable, so briefly justify the choices that you make
c) On a single graph, plot E(t) versus time curves for the model systems characterized in parts (i) -
(iii) in part (b). Add the experimental E(t) data to the graph. Nothing new for part c.
d) Prepare a second graph showing F(t) versus time for each of the models, along with the experimental F(t) data. Add the F(t) plot for model (iv) to the plot you made for PS5.
e) Based on these graphs, would you choose one of these models to represent the hydraulic data? If so, which one? If not, what other model might you test?
