Short story written by Kurt Vonnegut - “Harrison Bergeron” has a lot of moving parts despite being very concise. Husband and wife just lost their sone to the imprisonment in jail, but can’t think cleary about it because of the physical handicaps forced upon them. In this type of utopia it would be extremely easy to get caught up in your own thoughts and end up in a bad place. . Genesis 2:18 says: “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” The couple encourages each each-other to the best of their ability, but lack of options to truly change their living conditions is following through in the story. This shows us the importance of keeping the person important to us close and cherish moments with them.

Furthermore, the story unveils two other individuals on TV, who broke free from their chains and just for a short wile were free and able to experiment with their potential. “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.” (Ephesians 3:20) Everyone is capable of becoming a better versions of themselves and it is sometimes difficult to realize when living busy lives. Busy but comfortable in a sense, that motivates very few to get outside of their comfort zone and explore new horizons. Reason for that is fear; fear of the unknown obstacles and challenges that people would need to overcome to evolve.

Second story written by O’Connor called “Good Country People” describes a life of a girl with many accomplishments in her life except identification of her self-identity. Hulga had suffered a tragic accident which resulted in her leg being blown off. Perseverance through life she had became reliant on herself and focused her attention on studies. This resulted in formulation of a strong personality, but with lack of social skills. We are never truly alone, even if it feels this way sometimes. “Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20) Hulga had finally met a person who was different than her normal environment. Unfortunately for her she was shortly betrayed and left by herself in the place where nobody truly understood her.

Both of the stories create extreme cases of loneliness and hopelessness in order to emphasize its importance and presence in society. Many people around us, to include ourselves, may feel sad and lonely sometimes, but it is important to remember that even if we are by ourselves, we are never truly alone.
