You are a researcher and technical writer. You have been asked by your team manager (Ms. Peterson or Ms. Pete) to write a proposal for Ana Martinez (the name of your audience) who is the owner or point of contact within the hospital you will be working for. Ms. Martinez has asked CSNI to help the company decide whether and how to engage in political activism openly. You will be able to choose from a number of different hypothetical companies, which are found in the next section. Any time a person seeks to hire a consulting firm (and sometimes when a large company asks a department to do research to solve a problem), the first step is to write a proposal to do research. As you have read to do the reading quiz, proposals require you to have done some preliminary research to understand what you need to do to complete the recommendation report. Proposals are not quickly written lists of brainstormed ideas about what to write. I repeat -- a well-written proposal requires you to do preliminary research and then create a detailed list of tasks explaining what you will do to complete the research project and write a recommendation for the customer (or your boss, if the project is being handled within a larger company). The next section will give you the different options of company types you can select from; I hope you will choose a company that is related to or in the field you wish to pursue for your degree. Write a proposal to do research for the company you select. Create a name for the company, such as Saguaro Medical Center. Create a believable set of facts about your company, such as the name, gender, and ethnicity of the owner. The company must be a single, small company, not a franchise (Links to an external site.). The company is owned by the family, whose members also work at the company along with some number of additional employees (you should decide how many employees based upon an example of a real company of the type you select -- avoid guessing -- you will likely be able to find out how many employees these types of companies have, on average, on the Internet). You now have some background on the political tensions in the US that are entering the commercial markets and pushing large corporations to take sides. Since a good number of larger companies are taking sides with respect to laws that arguably could be used to suppress voter turnout, our topic is to research to see if a smaller company should behave the same way or not. Our basic research questions are, for X company (your choice on the type): Should X company openly take a position on the proposed voter laws in Arizona (speak out against, speak out in favor of, or stay quiet)? How would the action help or hurt the company compared to the harm from not doing the other choices (this is a classic economic thinking problem -- remember the opportunity costs (Links to an external site.) from the beginning of the quarter? What action will result in the least amount of potential financial harm? What action is most likely to keep the company in business in the short term? What action is most likely to keep the company in business in the long term? (These questions focus on immediate, short term harms compared to what you believe is most likely to happen in the future.) This question asks you to examine whether the democratic elements of the US voting system could be eliminated and a more autocratic regime gains power. Is this a realistic possible outcome? You should also consider whether the democratic elements of voting remain for white people or people who are part of a particular party (Republican at the moment), but minority groups do end up being excluded from the polls. How would that discrimination possibly impact the financial stability (and customer base) of the company? What are the likely political affiliation and belief structure of the company's customers? How will those customers feel about each action the company can take? For each action (speak out against, speak out in favor of, or stay quiet), assess whether the company could lose business by taking each action. Cite your sources using the APA style of citation.
