Reflection Journals Instructions

Purpose

Purpose:

Reflection is the key to getting meaning from your professional experience. Reflection requires you to think critically about your work experience.  You will not learn from your reflections unless you dedicate the time to write meaningful entries and approach this assignment as seriously as you would a research paper.

There are four (4) Reflective Journal submissions for this course.  The journal is not a work log. The focus of the journal is meaningful reflection on your experience with Covey’s 7 Habits concepts applied to your experience (you may use examples from work or examples outside of your work experience if you have not yet encountered or applied these concepts at work). Be specific and use examples from your real-life experience – apply the material, do not just discuss the concepts generally, I am well aware of what Covey thinks; I want to know what you think and how you have applied the concepts. Use headings throughout the journal to guide the reader.

Important: You must include in your reflective journals at least the number of topics required from each habit or section assigned and put each concept under a new heading (so typically at least 5 concepts will be covered per journal part I) and all additional questions and tasks in part II must be completed and discussed in the journals.

Part I:  Consider “Part One Paradigms and Principles,” from Covey’s 7 Habits.   Apply at least two(2) concepts from Part One using specific examples from your own experience, illustrate the concepts.  Explain the situation, discuss your thoughts about it after reading the Covey chapters, discuss how you might have behaved differently, or how you behaved in-line with the concepts or ideas.  How have you been challenged to think differently after reading Part One Paradigms and Principles?  How will this knowledge help you add value in the future? What if any applications are there to your internship experience/mentorship this semester?

Part II: Consider Habit 1 and apply three (3) concepts from Habit 1 to your personal experience using specific examples from your own experience, illustrate the concepts.  Explain the situation, discuss your thoughts about it after reading the Covey chapters, discuss how you might have behaved differently, or how you behaved in-line with the concepts or ideas.  How have you been challenged to think differently after reading the Covey Habit 1?  How will this knowledge help you add value in the future? What if any applications are there to your internship/mentorship experience this semester?

Assignment

Use specific examples of your experience to illustrate the Covey concepts as applied to your experience.  DO NOT restate what Covey has said or use his examples.  Find examples from your own life.  Make sure to include at least 2 Covey concepts from part I and 3 concepts from Habit 1, for a total of 5 concepts.

Part I:

1. Consider “Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind.” Apply at least three (3) concepts from the habit using personal examples from your experience.  And consider the meaning for you in this application, discuss your takeaways.

2. Consider "Habit 3:  Put First Things First."  Apply at least two (2) concepts from the habit to your personal experience.  And consider the meaning for you in this application, discuss your take-aways.

3. Write a Personal Mission Statement and include it in your journal:  Visit the following sites or use other mission setting sites for ideas, but make sure to write your own mission statement in sentence format:https://www.ramseysolutions.com/personal-growth/mission-statement-101and   Do not just list answers to the questions you find on these sites, use the answers to write a personalized statement. Condense your statement into a few meaningful sentences or short paragraph.

4. Do a personal SWOT analysis. (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats)– write out a summary of this analysis and include it.

5. Consider where you are in Covey's "Time Management Matrix."  Reflect on what Quadrant you are in regarding your internship/mentorship or other professional activities.  Also reflect on what quadrant you are in regarding your career planning efforts.

Part II of journal 2:  As part of this Journal 2 assignment, interview a higher-level executive in your organization to learn more about its culture, operations, and industry.  Try to interview someone on a higher level than your supervisor.  Develop and ask questions that will provide a basis for discussing the following topics and then write about these things in your journal:

  • The organization’s mission statement or apparent mission if no statement exists
  • A brief history of the company or organization
  • The organization’s structure
  • The activities of your project team, department, group or office. Include the range of services or goods provided by you and your co-workers, and the organization
  • The customers your organization serves, both internal and external
  • A brief description of where you (the intern) fit into the overall organization and the typical interactions you have with other functional areas

Write a thank you note or letter to the person you interviewed as soon as you possibly can after your interview. Attach a copy of your thank-you note with your journal.

Part I:

1. Consider"Habit 4:  Think Win/Win."  Apply at least two(2) concepts from the habit to your personal experience. What is your current personal paradigm?  Do you see the value in considering the different paradigms?  What does this habit challenge you to reflect on regarding your internship/mentorship and other work experience to-date?  What does this habit suggest for your personal and professional efforts in the future?  What does the habit mean toward your adding value in your future career?

Journal 1

2. Consider "Habit 5:  Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood."  Apply at least three (3) concepts from the habit to your personal experience.  How do you listen to people?  How do others listen to you?  Think about conversations you’ve had with people this week; characterize these conversations using the concepts from this habit.  What does this habit challenge you to reflect on regarding your internship/mentorship and other work experience to-date?  What does this habit suggest for your personal and professional efforts in the future?  What does the habit mean toward your adding value in your future career?

3. Develop a plan to teach Habit 5 to another person(s), and then go teachthe personabout Habit 5.  After teaching the Habit answer the following questions in your journal.  Who did you teach and why? What did you do and what were the results?  What did you learn about trying to teach another person in order to enhance their personal/professional development?  What did you learn about the habit yourself? Are you a good listener?  Do you seek first to understand? What do you plan to do differently in the future as a result of this exercise?

1. Set up a time when you can meet with your supervisor and discuss your progress so far in your internship experience, is there anything they would like you to know about your performance?  Is there anything you can improve?  Consider feedback on your performance provided by your supervisor and evaluate your progress toward achieving your learning objectives (as outlined on your Individual Development Plan worksheet). In performing this evaluation:

2. Evaluate the progress of your learning objectives, accomplishments and any setbacks you may be facing. (If necessary, resubmit the Individual Development Plan Worksheet and Individual Development Plan Agreement form if learning objectives change. If changes, be sure to have the form re-signed by your supervisor to ensure alignment.)

3. Assess your supervisor’s feedback about your performance and clarify any concerns you may have. What does the feedback mean with regards to adding value to your future career?

4. Discuss the feedback your supervisor provided regarding your performance. What suggestions were made to improve your performance? What positive aspects of your performance did they highlight?

Part I:

1. Consider “Habit 6: Synergize.” Apply at least two (2) concepts from the habit to your personal experience. What does this habit challenge you to reflect on regarding your internship and other work experience to-date? What does this habit suggest for your personal and professional efforts in the future? What does the habit mean toward your adding value in your future career?

2. Consider “Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw.” Apply at least three (3) concepts from the habit to your personal experience. What does this habit challenge you to reflect on regarding your internship and other work experience to-date? What does this habit suggest for your personal and professional efforts in the future? What does the habit mean toward your adding value in your future career?

1. Reflecting on your internship this semester,

2. What risks did you take or avoid? (Healthy risks to get more out of your experience – not risky behavior)

3. What new behaviors have you tried?

4. What were the effects of what you did; how did you feel about those results?

5. What have you learned that you might not have learned in the classroom?

6. What realizations, insights, or lessons have you learned about yourself, co-workers, supervisors, etc.?

Based on your experience with reading the book assignedin this course this semester, what if anything has changed about your plans for the future or your perspective about your personal goals, achievements and definitions of success? Which Habit made the biggest impression on you and why?  What Habit do you think it would be helpful to revisit, learn more about, explore in your future?
