This assignment must be written in your own words (for best grade). This narrative should begin with a general description of the basic principles of cellular technology and then document how these basic principles evolved from 1G to 2G, to 3G and 4G. Your narrative should describe why and how cellular standards had to evolve over time for the next generation of cellular technologies. You should also briefly describe general technical details of 5G cellular networks but this entire assignment should be done in your own words and using minimal references.
1. Beyond describing the basic principles of cellular technology, your narrative should begin with the 1G Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) technology. Describe in your own words how it works; the frequency spectrum used and the advantages/disadvantages of this technology. Then move to the 2G Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) and again describe in your own words how it works; the frequency spectrum used and the advantages/disadvantages of this digital technology. Then do the same for the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and for the 3G Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technologies. The last topic on your narrative is the 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology which requires a separate level of details (see next section below).
2. Because the 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) and 5G technologies are different from the earlier 3rd Generation equipment, for 4G you should include at least the items described
The page numbers for the above topics are from our eTextbook by James Kurose and Keith Ross. Your formal writing assignments must be written in your own writing style; just as you did on the first day of class for your first writing assignment. Writing styles are like a signature; so I know when you are copying from materials that were provided to you for this assignment or when you are copying from on-line references. Even if you quote your references, unless the material is presented in your own words, you won’t be getting credit.
