GH101A Discussion Board Participation and Expectations
Respond kindly to this two others posts. Each post will be 125 words However, if I had to pick one as my favorite, it would be Socio-economic human rights with Civil-political being a close second.
Why I choose Socio-economic human rights to be the most important is humans need to have proper nutrition, shelter, health care, and education. As well as economic needs like work and fair wages, an adequate living standard, and a social security net.
The one essential item left out that I found in the Civil-political human rights section is the freedom of thought and religion, also equality before the law. Ill these rights play a significant role in how our society functions today.
Second response you will write on The generation of rights that I find the most important is the second generation. This generation starts to bring a more positive light to human rights and the participation of state. Weston writes this about the second generation
Historically, it is counterpoint to the first generation of civil and political rights, with human rights conceived more in positive ("rights to") than negative ("freedoms from") terms, requiring the intervention, not the abstention, of the state for the purpose of assuring equitable participation in the production and distribution of the values involved" I believe this generation is important because it requires people to need resources from the state to be able to participate in some of the rights wanted. This helps establish a better relationship between the state and the people. There needs to be more of a mutual respect between each. The Leven Institute from The State University of New York writes this about second generation rights, "They are not rights directly possessed by individuals but constitute positive duties upon the government to respect and fulfill them" (2017, par. 7). I believe it is an important goal to foster a healthy, mutual respect and relationship between people and government.
