Professional Memorandum Assignment: Job Ad-related Research Findings and Employment Materials
Answered

Purpose

Purpose:

To engage with rhetorical principles of audience, purpose, and style related to professional memorandums
To present job ad-related research findings
To assess individual preparedness for a job ad
To apply attribution guidelines appropriate to an accepted professional style guide

Audience:

Me (as receiver and for assessment)

Instructions: We have shifted into specifically engaging job ad materials.  For this assignment, everyone needs to create two memos: 1) a memo reporting on a specific job ad, and 2) a memo assessing your preparedness for the job

Content Development:

For this assignment, our goal is to apply the medium of professional memorandum (memo, for short) to a report of information.  The writing should bring forward previous conversations about reporting, professional writing styles, and attribution where appropriate.

For Memo 1: Write a 250+ word memo that reflects a report of information emphasizing 1) what interested you about this job ad; 2) what the job ad asks for in terms of education, certification(s), and/or specialization(s); and 3) what the job responsibilities are.

Content Note 1: To find a job ad, use a job search website to locate the material for this project: CareerBuilder, Indeed, Monster, or even an internal job posting if you are working for an organization you'd like to advance with, etc.

Content Note 2: As an assignment based on research, we want to continue applying attribution standards, but as a memo, we will modify how we present a reference list. Because memo writing emphasizes content on a single page, incorporate the reference as a footnote (see HERE for how to do this in Word and HERE for how to do this in Google Docs).

For Memo #2: Write a 250+ word memo that assesses your individual preparedness for the position outlined in the job ad from Memo #1.  Report how you measure up to those specifications and how you intend to meet those qualifications one day. For example: where are you qualified? what areas do you need to develop as you progress in your education? what areas of continuing education may you need to consider?
Important Note: It is okay if you are currently under-qualified for a position. Just like our earlier research about emerging trends helps us understand what we should be involved with, so too does this. In this case, we can think long term about what we need to accomplish to get where we want to be.

Purpose:

To engage with rhetorical principles of audience, purpose, and style related to employment materials
To apply professional résumé & cover letter writing standards
To revise and update existing employment materials to respond to professional document standards and job ad research
To create/begin to create an interview-ready, career field-specific employment documents

Audience

Audience:

Employer from Job Prospects Memos job ad

Me (assessment)

Instructions: As we close our term and wrap up learning about professional organizations, emerging trends in the field, and what an employer wants from applicants for your (intended) career field, we end with employment materials: the résumé and cover letter.

Content Development:

For this assignment, our goal is to create the beginnings of a professional résumé and a cover letter that directly responds to the job ad from your previous assignment. Following the guidelines outlined in our readings, create material to respond to that ad.

Important Note: Everyone is at different stages in their educational and career journeys. For this reason, I do not expect everyone to have a completely viable résumé and cover letter, but instead documents everyone can build on as they go.  Please review the content element notes below for how to navigate this.

Cover Letter: Following letter formatting, write a 200+ word cover letter to introduce yourself and your interest in the position while highlighting key elements from the résumé. The language should be specific to accomplishments, especially because cover letters allows us to provide more information about something listed there If you are emerging in your educational and career field, as best as possible link your existing accomplishments and work experience with how an employer might find that valuable for the position, even if you don't get have the qualifications.  Sometimes, especially if we're moving into a new field, we have to bridge what we have done with how the employer should interpret that as valuable.

Résumé: Create a professional résumé engaging one of the types outlined by de Silva, et al.  Incorporate the relevant "key sections" and order résumé elements in a way that your (intended) career field values. Use the overall résumé guidelines to be concise, accurate, and ethical in your representation of yourself. Highlight education and accomplishments relevant for the position, but avoid filler to make the résumé longer (i.e. at this point, anything from high school).
Again, if you are emerging in your educational and career field, the résumé document may look sparse. If you would like to offset this with future accomplishments you know are coming, then include that in a different font color.

Document Formatting:

The writing project requires professional employment materials, so follow the formatting guidelines provided by the required reading assignments. Different fields have different expectations for what this looks like, so feel free to look at résumé samples from your (intended) career field.

In the end, we want documents that present us in the strongest way, which includes overall layout design and content. Be mindful of color choices and integration of graphics--these carry cultural cues that can distract from our intended message and limit the readability for documents (see de Silva et al.'s conversation about the color red).
