Biographical information:
Mary is 25 years old and has recently moved here with her husband due to a job transfer. Her mother also lives with them. She married her husband, Joe, 6 months ago. She has been working at a fast food restaurant. Mary is 10 weeks pregnant, G1P0. She states they weren’t trying to prevent pregnancy, but didn’t think it would happen so quickly

Family information:
Mary’s mother has moved in with them as she states Mary will need help now that she’s sick, pregnant and doesn’t really know anyone in town very well. Mary’s father left her mother when he found out that she was pregnant when they were both 17. She has no relationship with him.

Other information available:
Mary has arrived at the clinic with her mother. Her mother states there was no reason for Joe to miss work just to go to the doctor’s office, she’s here to help so she’ll just attend all the prenatal visits with Mary.

Mary complains of nausea and vomiting for the last week. Upon weighing her you note that she has lost 2 lbs since her last visit 4 weeks ago.

Her mother states that she vomited the entire time she was pregnant and that it was a horrible experience. “But what can you expect-you’re pregnant”
Mary appears un-kept and teary. She states she just wants to stay in bed all day because she’s sick. She’s been unable to go to work which has added to their financial burden. When  questioned Mary states she hasn’t even bothered to try and eat the last 2 days because she’s afraid she will throw up more.

Mary states she initially planned on breast feeding but her mother was unsuccessful at her attempt so there is no use in her even trying
