The Gibbs reflective cycle is one of the most popular cyclical models of reflection which enables people to explore and experience. Gibbs introduced this model in the year 1988 in his book, “Learning by Doing: A guide to teaching and learning methods”.
The Reflective cycle model of Gibbs consists of six stages. Description of the experience. Feelings and thoughts about the experience, Evaluation of the experience, both good and bad, Analysis to make sense of the situation, Conclusion about what you learned and what you could have done differently, Action plan for how you would deal with similar situations in the future, or general changes you might find appropriate. This model provides a good way to work with an experience. These experiences could be regular scenarios that ne has to go through or one-of-a-kind experiences. There is a series of guiding questions that help in reflecting on each of the six stages. The model looks as follows:
The six stages of Gibbs reflective cycle help the user to reflect on various aspect of a situation. The first stage provides a description, the second stage analyses the feelings and thoughts, the third stage provides an evaluation of the feelings and thoughts, both good and bad, the fourth stage provides an analysis of the situation, the fifth stage concludes the learning and alternative course of action possible for the situation and finally, the sixth stage comes up with an action plan to deal with similar situations in future. By going through these steps chronologically, one can reflect on their experiences critically.
One example of using Gibbs reflective cycle for reflection on group work experience could be as follows:
Description
For a power point preparation of a company, I had to work in a group of four. We divided the work among us equally and felt that we would just meet the day before the final deadline and merge everything together. However, when that day came, it was clear that each had a different approach and merging them would create a fragmented piece of work.
Feelings
This realization was frustrating and alarming to me. Most of the team members had almost given up hope of submitting this ppt as there was not much time to recreate it.
Evaluation
The good part of the situation was that everybody has given their best and were willing to put some more effort but the bad part was that there was very less time and as we discussed more, they were all losing the motivation.
Analysis
This situation aroused as we did not take at the initial stages to create a plan and decide on a perspective. We did not meet at regular interval and worked on our own parts on our own style.
Conclusion
I learnt that in group work, dividing work and planning the whole project beforehand is essential for the success of a project. Tasks must be divided according to the strengths of each person and for that group development activities are necessary.
Action plan
Next time when I am working in a group, I will identify the strengths of each member and would use discussions for ice-breaker. I would develop my leadership abilities so that I can assist them in the situation that we were in.
The pros of the model are:
The cons of this model are:
There are several models for reflection. These include ERA cycle, Driscoll model, Kolb’s experiential learning cycle and Gibbs reflective cycle. There are certain similarities among all of the models. First, each model starts with a description stage and ends with an action plan. The difference lies on the middle stages and the depth of reflection they offer. While Gibbs model is step by step and thus, restrictive, Driscoll or ERA model is flexible. Kolb’s learning cycle provides in depth analysis of learning and experience and helps users to understand their learning styles as well. Models like Gibbs or Driscoll does not necessarily bring out the strengths and weaknesses through reflection.
Here are some journal articles that talks about Gibbs reflective cycle.
The reference for Gibbs reflective cycle can be found in the book written by Gibbs himself. It is as follows:
Gibbs. G., 1988. Learning by Doing: A guide to teaching and learning methods. Further Education Unit. Oxford Polytechnic: Oxford.
In the conclusion part of the Gibbs Reflective cycle, the user can make conclusions about their learning from the experience. They can highlight the strengths and weaknesses that they have identified and the changes that are required to improve on that situation.
In the evaluation stage of the Gibbs reflective cycle, the user can evaluate what went well and wat did not in the situation and the reasons behind them. they can also reflect on the contribution of their self and others for the situation. Questions like what was good and bad about the experience, what did not go well, what went well and what contribution did you and other people had on the situation both positively and negatively. This a vital stage of the model and leads to a more in-depth and accurate analysis of the situation.
