When an individual is adding or subtracting negative fractions the numerator is deemed to be considered negative and due to such, the method is considered to just be the same as it needs to add the negative as well as positive numerators. The negative fractions are supposed to be like any other fraction as these have a preceding negative sign. Therefore, the process of adding as well as subtracting negative fractions is supposed to be straight forward as the individuals keep it in mind about adding these fractions. Hence, it can be stated that a negative fraction is considered to be subtracted from another as such is similar to the thing that is adding the positive complement of the fraction.
In order to add the negative fractions, the denominators need to be made at the bottom of the fraction if it is not the same. In addition to this, the individuals can also add halves to halves or quarters to quarters, or tenths to tenths as these would be creating a basis for a valid answer. The subtraction of the negative factors would also be following a similar method. Therefore, if the negative fractions are supposed to be added or they do not have any kind of similar denominator then the individuals can make it so. For instance, “-1/2, for example, can be written as -2/4, -3/6, -4/8, et cetera.” In each of the cases, it can be understood that the number is always on the top half of the number that is at the bottom as these fractions are supposed to be creating a mean half of a quantity. Thus, it can be understood that, in order to add the negative fractions, the numbers need to be provided and it is not necessary to provide positive numbers at all times as the number line would be the line where the zero numbers would be given in both the directions. Thus, to the right, the positive numbers would be given and to the left, there would be the zero number as these are supposed to be all of the negative numbers which can be used and written as fractions.
A negative fraction needs to be added through another negative number as the negative fraction would be resulting in a negative fraction where the result would be determined. Therefore, the negative fraction would be subtracted from some other thing and this would be adding the positive complement of that fraction. The denominators would also be at the bottom of the fraction and it would be the same as they are not supposed to be ready. Hence, the fractions cannot be considered to be negative as the fractions would be a part or have the whole part which would be expressed through the numbers which might not be equal.
Example 1: For instance,
“Find the sum.
95+(−43)
The LCM of 5 and 3 is 15.
To add the fractions with unlike denominators, rename the fractions with a common denominator.
95=9 × 35 × 3=2715−43=−4 × 53 × 5=−2015
So,
95+(−43)=2715+(−2015)
Since the denominators are the same, add the numerators.
=27+(−20)15=715”.
Example 2:
“Find the difference.
−710−215
The LCM of 10 and 15 is 30.
To subtract the fractions with unlike denominators, rename the fractions with a common denominator.
−710=−710×33=−2130215=215×22=430
So,
−710−215=−2130−430
Since the denominators are the same, subtract the numerators.
−2130−430=−21−430
Simplify. We get:
−2530 or −56”.
Fraction is considered to be a new concept where there is an entirely different notation that makes it completely difficult for the students to understand. Therefore, it is part of the reason why the students are supposed to find themselves stressing about working on such fractions as the fractions seem unfamiliar to them. It is important to put an emphasis on the fractions as these are the numbers that are considered to help individuals in making decisions with precise and accurate means and with the correct amounts. Therefore, the fractions are supposed to act as the numerator where the bottom number is known as the denominator. “For the fraction 1/2; 1 is the numerator and 2 is the denominator.” The fractions are supposed to be of different types where equivalent fraction is considered to have different numerators as well as denominators but these are equal to the same value as these are known as equivalent fractions. “1/2, 2/4, 3/6, and 4/8 represent the same value which is ‘HALF’”. The fractions are considered to represent through the area model or through the linear model along with the discrete model. Therefore, it can be stated that it might be challenging for the students to learn these but once they have learned it their understanding of the fractions are supposed to be better.
In order to put the negative fractions in the equation, the ideas need to be kept in mind in order to explain such as subtraction is considered to be the same thing that would follow the explanation. This would also add the negative. The negative number, on the other hand, would be created through the multiplication of the number through a negative one. Therefore, these are the principles that are applied to fractions as well.
For instance “These principles apply to fractions as well, so:
Therefore, when an individual is considered to be subtracting a number the value is being taken away from another number as these make the numbers less than 0. Thus, it is demonstrated through the image below.
Thus, adding two numbers is considered to help the individuals in combining the value as this would create negative as well as positive numbers such as
Hence, it can be stated that subtracting a fraction would be the same thing as adding a negative fraction as these need to be multiplied by two negative fractions as such always offers a certain kind of an answer that is positive.
