There are diploma, B.E. or B. Tech and M.E. or M. Tech courses available in different universities. The diploma courses have a duration of three years while the B.E. or B. Tech courses have a duration of four years. The M.E. or M. Tech courses are generally of two years duration and can be done after completing diploma, B.E. or B. Tech. Generally, a four-year B.E. or B. Tech course is necessary to be appointed as a mining engineer. However, for diploma holders, an M.E. or M. Tech is sometimes required for them to be appointed in certain positions. Thus, it might take from 4 to 5 years for someone to become a fully practicing mining engineer.
