Catalog entries are essential tools used by librarians to help patrons find books, journals, and other library materials. The call number, which is included in the catalog entry, is a crucial piece of information that enables library users to locate the item they are looking for. In this essay, we will explore what call numbers are and what information they give us.
A call number is a unique code that is assigned to a library item to help identify and organize it on the shelves. It consists of a combination of letters and numbers that indicate the subject, author, and title of the item. The call number is usually printed on a label that is affixed to the spine of the book or on the front cover of other materials such as DVDs and CDs. When a patron wants to find a particular item, they can use the call number to navigate through the library's shelves to locate it.
Call numbers follow a standardized system called a classification system, which helps organize library materials by subject matter. The two most commonly used classification systems in libraries are the Dewey Decimal System and the Library of Congress Classification System.
The Dewey Decimal System was created by Melvil Dewey in 1876 and is used in many public and school libraries. It organizes library materials into ten broad categories: philosophy, religion, social sciences, language, natural sciences and mathematics, technology, arts and recreation, literature, history and geography. Each of these categories is further divided into subcategories, and each subcategory is assigned a three-digit number. For example, the number 500 represents natural sciences and mathematics, while the number 530 represents physics. The numbers are then followed by letters that represent the author's last name or the title of the item.
The Library of Congress Classification System was created by the Library of Congress and is used in academic libraries and research institutions. It organizes library materials into twenty-one broad subject areas, such as philosophy, religion, and social sciences. Each of these categories is further divided into subcategories, and each subcategory is assigned a combination of letters and numbers that represent the subject matter of the item. For example, the call number for a book on the history of the Civil War would be E468.9 .J65 2012, where E represents the history of the Americas, 468.9 represents the Civil War, J65 represents the author's last name, and 2012 represents the year of publication.
In addition to helping library users locate items on the shelves, call numbers also provide valuable information about the item itself. They can give us an idea of the subject matter of the item, the author or editor of the item, the edition of the item, and the year of publication.
The subject matter of the item is indicated by the first few letters or numbers of the call number. For example, if the call number begins with the letter Q, it indicates that the item is related to science. If it begins with the letter P, it indicates that the item is related to language and literature.
The author or editor of the item is usually indicated by the letters that follow the subject matter code. In the Dewey Decimal System, the first three letters of the author's last name are used, while in the Library of Congress Classification System, the first two letters of the author's last name are used. If the item is an edited volume or a work by multiple authors, the editor's name or the names of the authors may also be included in the call number.
The edition of the item is usually indicated by a letter or number that follows the author's name. For example, if the call number includes the letters "2nd ed.," it indicates that the item is a second edition.
