The topic that sociologists are studying when they examine how race and ethnicity affect income is called "racial and ethnic stratification." This field of study focuses on how social factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, and social class influence access to resources, opportunities, and rewards within a society.
Racial and ethnic stratification refers to the unequal distribution of wealth, power, and prestige based on race and ethnicity. It is a form of social inequality that affects people's lives in various ways, including their access to education, healthcare, housing, and employment.
In the United States, for example, people of color generally earn less than white people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median household income for white households was $70,642 in 2019, while the median household income for Black households was $45,438, and for Hispanic households, it was $56,113.
These income disparities are not simply a result of individual differences in education, experience, or ability. Instead, they are largely due to structural barriers that prevent people of color from accessing high-paying jobs and other resources.
One of the ways that sociologists study the impact of race and ethnicity on income is by examining labor market segmentation. This refers to the division of the labor market into different segments or categories, each with its own set of opportunities and rewards.
In the United States, for example, people of color are more likely to be employed in low-wage jobs, such as service or manual labor, while white people are more likely to be employed in high-paying jobs, such as management or professional occupations. This is known as occupational segregation.
Occupational segregation can be caused by a number of factors, including discrimination in hiring, education, and training, as well as cultural biases and stereotypes about different racial and ethnic groups. For example, studies have shown that job applicants with "white-sounding" names are more likely to be called back for an interview than those with "black-sounding" names, even when their qualifications are identical.
Another way that sociologists study the impact of race and ethnicity on income is by examining the educational attainment of different groups. Education is often seen as a key factor in upward mobility and economic success. However, people of color face a number of obstacles in accessing quality education, including underfunded schools, lack of access to advanced coursework and extracurricular activities, and discrimination in discipline and punishment.
As a result, people of color are less likely to earn college degrees and other advanced credentials that can lead to high-paying jobs. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in 2019, 47% of white adults in the United States had a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 28% of Black adults and 21% of Hispanic adults.
In addition to educational attainment and labor market segmentation, sociologists also study the impact of race and ethnicity on income through the lens of discrimination and prejudice. Discrimination refers to the unequal treatment of individuals or groups based on their race, ethnicity, gender, or other characteristics. Prejudice refers to negative attitudes or beliefs about a particular group.
Both discrimination and prejudice can affect people's ability to access high-paying jobs, promotions, and other resources. For example, studies have shown that job applicants with "Black-sounding" names are less likely to be called back for an interview than those with "white-sounding" names, even when their qualifications are identical.
Sociologists also examine the impact of racial and ethnic stratification on social mobility. Social mobility refers to the ability of individuals to move up or down the social ladder over the course of their lives. In a society with high levels of social mobility, individuals can improve their economic standing through hard work and achievement.
