However, it is important to note that certain viruses can still enter the body through the respiratory system, even if they cannot pass through the alveolar epithelium. For example, the flu virus can infect the respiratory tract and cause symptoms like coughing, sneezing, and fever. While the virus may not directly enter the bloodstream through the alveoli, it can still cause significant damage to the respiratory system.
In addition to large molecules and viruses, certain gases are also not transferred by alveoli. While oxygen and carbon dioxide are the main gases that are exchanged in the alveoli, other gases like nitrogen and argon are not transferred. This is because these gases are relatively inert and do not participate in the gas exchange process.
