Telemachus was well-thought-out to prevail in Greek Mythology where he was the son of the Greek hero Odysseus and his wife Penelope. When he had reached manhood, he visited Pylos as well as Sparta due to his search for his wandering father. However, on his return, he had found that Odysseus returned back home before him. Therefore, the father and the son had slewed the suitors who came for Penelope. As per the later tradition, it had been noted that Telemachus got married to Circe or Calypso after the death of his father. “François de Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon’s Les Aventures de Télémaque (1699)” was considered to set the fashion for the stories and the novels that discussed the education of the princes or the heroes and this was deemed to be the trials of Telemachus as he was guided by Athena who had been disguised as a mentor. The character was made on the basis of the modern usage of a mentor. The first four books regarding Odyssey concentrated on the journeys of Telemachus as he was wandering and searching for his father who was supposed to return home from the Trojan War. Therefore, the title for such was traditionally given which depicted Telemachy. However, it can be stated that Telemachus’s name demonstrated far from battle in Greek or fighting from afar as that of a bowman.
In Homer’s version of the Odyssey, it had been stated that Telemachus was under the tutelage of Athena who had accompanied him during the time of his quests. Therefore, the first four books provided the knowledge of his father who had left for Troy during the time Telemachus was still an infant. At the outset of the journey, the father had been absent from his home at Ithaca for twenty years due to the intervention of Poseidon and the Trojan War. During the absence, therefore, the house of Odysseus had been occupied by hordes of suitors who were seeking the hand of Penelope. However, Telemachus first visited Nestor, and then he was well received by an old man where he regaled him with stories about his father’s successes and glories. Subsequently, after such, the departure with Nestor’s son Peisistratus made him search further for his father. He was accompanied to the halls of Menelaus and his wife was Helen. While being there Telemachus had been treated again as an honored guest which was temporary yet contradictory since the stories of his father exploited at Troy. Subsequently, Telemachus was considered to concentrate on the father’s return to Ithaca. He also visited Eumaeus who was a swineherd and who happened to host a disguised Odysseus. However, after the big reveal of Odysseus to Telemachus due to the advice of Athena, the two men plan a downfall regarding the suitors. Therefore, the return of Telemachus to the palace in order to keep an eye on the suitors and to wait for the return of his father as a beggar was supposed to be discussed through the management of books. In addition to this, when Penelope challenged the suitors in order to string Odysseus’ bow and shoot an arrow through the handle-holes that were considered to consist of twelve ax heads Telemachus attempted the task first. Therefore, he would not have completed the task as he was nearly stringing the bow on the fourth attempt. Nevertheless, Odysseus stopped him subtly before he could finish the attempt. This was followed by the suitors’ failure to comply with the task as Odysseus revealed himself and he also brought Telemachus to bring swift as well as bloody death to the suitors.
Nevertheless, Telegony was supposed to be a short two-book epic poem that recounted the life as well as the death of Odysseus after the events of the Odyssey. In the mythological postscript, Odysseus was considered to accidentally kill Telegonus who was his unknown son by the goddess Circe. However, after the subsequent death of Odysseus Telemachus returned to Aeaea with Telegonus and Penelope and he married Circe. During the time Telemachus was an infant he was still maturing when The Odyssey began. He was devoted wholly to his mother as he was maintaining his father’s estate. However, he did not know how to protect the estate from suitors as it was only a few years since he realized the intentions of the suitors. Nonetheless, his meeting with Athena helped him change things as he was improving his stature and became bearing. Athena being the mentor had also taught him the responsibilities of a young prince. This helped him in becoming assertive. He then confronted the suitors and denounced the abuse on his estate. This made Penelope and Eurycleia more upset as well as anxious as he did not shy away from taking any kind of control. Telemachus never matched with his father’s talent fully at least not by the conclusion of The Odyssey as he was having a stout heart and along with that an active mind. This helped him with his bit of temper at times as he never schemed with similar skills as that of his father. However, it was found through the book report that he accidentally left the weapons storeroom unlocked. This was a careless mistake as it allowed the suitors to prepare and arm themselves. While his father made certain mistakes in judgments over the course of the epic. It was found that it was difficult for making such an absent-minded blunder as the scene with the bow captured the endpoint of the development in a perfect manner. This was considered to be during the time he tried to string it and did not quite do so. Nonetheless, the episode helped in reminding everyone that at the close of The Odyssey Telemachus could not match the ability of his father but he was well on the way. Thus, The Odyssey helped in realizing a cunning difference that made it be apparent to the epics. It concentrated and focused on a man of twists and turns as Odysseus did not have any extraordinary strength but he was the only man who could string the bow. Therefore, he relied too much more on the mind than that on the muscle. This was a tendency where he could encounter his showcase. Thus, he knew how to not overpower Polyphemus as he would not be able to budge a boulder from the door. Therefore, he schemed around with his disadvantage in strength by exploiting the stupidity of Polyphemus. However, in spite of not using violence he put out Polyphemus’s single eye and the display of strength became a larger part of the plan to deceive the brute. Similarly, Odysseus was considered to know that there was no match for the host as strapping young suitors were supposed to make the other strong. Therefore, he played by the wits.
Therefore, the secondary plot that featured Prince Telemachus was considered to be a coming-of-age story. As the epic opened Telemachus was considered to be twenty-one years of age and he was on the brink of manhood as he was uncertain and along with such insecure with his potential power and he was also in serious danger from the suitors as they would see him dead. Telemachus was initially asserted by calling an assembly of Ithaca’s leaders in order to protest the activities of the suitors. However, he spoke well at the meeting which impressed certain elders but the leading suitors did not show any kind of respect for his mother as well as for him. Therefore, little had been accomplished. Nevertheless, Athena sensed danger and she managed to convince the prince into visiting two foreign kings who were old comrades of his father. Nestor of Pylos and Menelaus of Sparta. During the time of his travels, Telemachus grew into a man and Athena had disguised herself as a mentor as she instructed him. He also learned how to behave among the Greek leaders and Nestor helped in reinforcing the prince through respect for loyalty as well as devotion. In addition to this, Menelaus also encouraged him with certain news that Odysseus might be alive and he might have been held captive by the goddess-nymph calypso. However, Athena kept the prince alive by preventing him to avoid an ambush that had been set up by the suitors during his return trip to Ithaca. Consequently, after he had joined his father, he was made an important and significant part of the king’s plot as they tried to overcome the suitors and this was a good deal for Telemachus since it was based on faith. Thus, the belief in support of the gods specifically Athena was considered to help him in being known as a legend. During the showdown, he was shrewd enough to get his mother out of the line of fire as he was mature enough to assist Odysseus. Therefore, the prince was considered to stand against more than a hundred suitors with the help and assistance of his father and along with such a couple of herdsmen who were supposed to be on their side as he fought valiantly, by earning his father’s respect as well as trust.
