The Screwtape letters is a novel written by C.S Lewis based on Christian apology and it is dedicated to J.R.R. Tolkien. The novel follows a particular style and that is satirical and epistolary, it follows a fictional format, the characters and the plot is used to address the issues related to Christian theology, especially things that is related to enticement and resistance. The Screwtape Letters is consisting of 31 letters written by a demon named Screwtape to his nephew named Wormwood, who is much younger in age and do not have much experience, and he is charged for guiding a named Patient in the novel towards the devil who is regarded as "Our Father Below" from the enemy who is the “God.”
The novel is first published in the year 1942, in the month of January, the stories are in the form of letters. The nephew's involvement in guaranteeing the damnation of a British guy known only as "the Patient" is the subject of the uncle's mentorship.
In short, the writer C.S Lewis says that he got hold of certain letters known as Screwtape Letters somewhere. But he is not going to disclose how he got those letters. The writer says that Screwtape is a demon, and the writer further tells the readers not to believe the words spoken by the demon because the words are only the vision of Screwtape. The letters begin by saying that the demon the Screwtape the demon advises his nephew, Wormwood as to how he can attract the British man who has been given the name of “the patient” who has been forced to commit a sin and as a result of which he was driven into hell. Wormwood is a new demon who has attended a training school to assist him prepare to lure mankind into immorality.
Screwtape, on the other hand, argues that because of its inept director, Slubgob, this college has taught Wormwood nothing. The Patient has converted to Christianity and began attending church, according to the second letter. The patient is probably in his thirties and stays with his mother taking care of her.
The mother of the patient is a difficult woman as she always makes demands on the patient’s time and energy. Screwtape instructs Wormwood in the early letters to make the Patient believe that being Christian is an interior, spiritual experience rather than an exterior manner of existing in the world. Wormwood should make the Patient dispute with his mother about trivial things like the house and duties after he prays. The relationship between Screwtape and Wormwood begins to emerge in these early letters.
Wormwood remains undetectable while following the Patient around Earth. He basically whispers in the Patient's ear, urging him to have bad feelings and engage in harmful diversions. Screwtape, unlike Wormwood, is a seasoned tempter. He has already amassed a large number of souls for Hell. This has apparently won him a seat in Hell's enormous "Lowerarchy," a wicked company that decides how to best organize Hell's seduction efforts on Earth.
When World War II begins, the Patient is concerned about being conscripted. Wormwood is advised by Screwtape to take advantage of the Patient's indecision, and the conflict quickly comes to a halt. Patient finds new, nameless acquaintances at this period. These acquaintances, on the other hand, are not Christians. They are sceptics who are well-versed in the world. Wormwood is advised by Screwtape to make the Patient a hypocrite.
Because he has such clever and sophisticated friends, the Patient should believe he is better than his fellow, modest churchgoers, and he should believe he is better than his friends because, he is a Christian. Wormwood appears to be doing a fantastic job of winning over the Patient's soul as a result of the bad effect of these buddies on the Patient. The Patient, however, soon experiences a reawakening of his faith after reading a book and taking a walk near an old mill. This reawakening is a second conversion, and the Enemy—God—creates a barrier of grace around the Patience during it.
Screwtape urges Wormwood to entice the Patient with sexual delights after the Patient's second conversion. Screwtape orders Wormwood to compile a list of all the young women in the Patient's area who would make poor marriage partners. The Patient, on the other hand, falls in love with the Woman. The Woman, a Christian girl from a Christian household, has a huge beneficial impact on the Patient's life. Screwtape is enraged by the Woman.
Wormwood reports Screwtape to Hell's secret police during this period because Screwtape says that the Enemy adores humanity. This claim is heresy in Hell. It goes against Hell's core doctrine that the Enemy's love is a falsehood used by the Enemy to hide His self-interest. Wormwood's work with the Patient continues to be slow, as Screwtape morphs into a huge centipede during an outburst of rage. This is a common occurrence, and he, as an outer expression of his inner "Life Force," is able to clear his name with Hell's authorities by explaining that he was just comparing the Enemy's love for people to the Enemy's inexplicable obsession with humanity.
In, the meantime it is seen that the World War II became active again. Bombs were dropped by the Germans on the hometown of the Patient. The Patient was not able to understand what should he do and made him afraid of his life. Screwtape asks his nephew to take advantage of the patient’s condition. But it was seen that the patient acted as he should do because he was afraid and coward.
According to Screwtape this is bad news. The nephew is being warned by the demon that the soul of the patient is ready to go to heaven. And Screwtape advises the nephew to keep the man alive as much as he can. But unfortunately, the patient dies due to German air raid and his soul was taken to heaven. The letter ends by saying that Screwtape is very excited to eat up Wormwood as he was unsuccessful in doing his task.
