Write a critical appraisal of research that is published as a primary research article (not a systematic review, review protocol or meta analysis) in a recognised peer-reviewed journal in the last 3 years (2019, 2020 or 2021)
You must choose an article that is different from the examples given to you during taught sessions.
You should evaluate the research in the publication and consider the ethics of the research to meet the learning outcomes for this assessment.
Â
Submit a word (.doc or .docx) document with your critical appraisal using the submission link on the MD7001 moodle page which can be found under the tile âAssessment October 2021-2022â using the submission link
âAssessment 1 October 2021â. You should name your file with your programme name and your J number (for example âgastroenterology J190876â).
Work submitted after the deadline will be recorded as late, unless an extension or deferral has been obtained before the deadline. This applies to work that is even a few seconds late. The penalty for late work is 5 marks for
work submitted up to 24 hours after a deadline, and 5 marks per day after this, including weekends. Because the system gets very busy you should consider submitting well in advance of the deadline (the day before is
recommended). If you have technical difficulties submitting, you should contact LIS. Do not contact the module lead as I will not be able to do anything about technical problems, I have no way of submitting your work for
you.
Contact study skills if you are struggling with this referencing format. You will struggle to meet the learning
outcomes for this module if you can not reference accurately in this style so do seek support early on.
Â
Learning outcomes assessed: -
1. Critically appraise relevant scientific and clinical literature, including ethical considerations
2. Be able to articulate research outcomes in appropriate language Drafts: You can submit a draft of your critical appraisal to the turnitin link on the MD7001 moodle page under the tile âassessment 2021- 2022â with the title âDraft for assessment 1 October 2021â by 09.00 on Thursday 4th November 2021. Late submissions will not be
accepted under any circumstances. You should name your file with your programme name and your J number (for example âgastroenterology 190876â). You will be provided with feedback on the structure of your assessment (choice of paper, appropriate referencing etc) and a comment on your critical writing, you may
be signposted to access support where needed. You will not be given a mark or suggested mark.
Task in more detail
Select a single primary research article published in the last 3 years and write a critical appraisal of it. You must clearly demonstrate an ability to analyse and evaluate the research in the article (please donât focus on appraising how well the article has been written, we are interested in the science/research not the writing style) and consider the ethical implications of the research and how they have been dealt with in the publication in order to meet the two learning outcomes for this assessment. As with all level 7 assessments, you must show in
depth knowledge, the use of appropriate sources for evidence, evaluation of the literature and clear communication (see the marking criteria for this assessment for details).
