Assessment Brief: Creating Infographic and Blog for Applied Exercise Scientists

Task

Assessment Brief:

A key role for an applied exercise scientist is bridging the gap between research and the translation of this research to the end-user i.e. coaches and athletes. Thus, the ability to summarise the findings from complex research studies, in a way that is concise and easy to understand, is an important skill.

For this assessment you will be provided with two recent research papers from which you will choose one. Using the research paper that you have chosen you are required to produce a 1 page infographic and 1 page blog summarising the findings from the study for an athlete or coach. References must be included for both the infographic and blog and should be on a separate page.

The infographic must summarise the main points of the study in a clear, easy to understand and eye catching way. The one page blog must provide a concise, yet accurate summary of the key aspects of the research, for the athlete or coach. This is likely to include why the research was conducted, the research question, the research approach or method used, the key findings, main discussion points, conclusion and any practical applications. The blog should be written as a more informal scientific communication for the coach/athlete. Referencing is still expected.

Half of the mark for this piece of work will be given for the infographic and half of the mark will be given for the blog and references.

Formatting and Submission Guidelines:

Infographic: It must be sized to fit on 1 A4 page. Your tutor will show you a range of packages that you may want to use to produce an infographic, however, ultimately it is your choice as to what package you use. References should be used and conform to APA 7th Edition. Make sure you can download your infographic from the software you are using (or screenshot it to a high quality).

Blog: 1 x A4 page, this should be formatted in Times New Roman, font size 12, with 1.5 line spacing, justified text to left and right margins, no paragraph indents, margins set to ‘normal’ (2.54cm top, bottom, left & right). References should be on an additional page and adhere to APA 7th Edition formatting.

The two pieces of work should be submitted as a single document with any references included on an additional page. Please ensure the infographic is copied into the document in a manner than ensures it is legible.

Assessment Feedback:

Feedback will be received in a timely manner within 20 working days. Please ensure you check any feedback you gained from the peer-review infographic session prior to the submission deadline.

Lab Report Topic

Pick one of the two journal articles below for your coursework:

Rønnestad, B. R., Hansen, J., Stensløkken, L., Joyner, M. J., & Lundby, C. (2019). Case studies in physiology: temporal changes in determinants of aerobic performance in individual going from alpine skier to world junior champion time trial cyclist. Journal of Applied Physiology, 127(2), 306-311.

Swinnen, W., Kipp, S., & Kram, R. (2018). Comparison of running and cycling economy in runners, cyclists, and triathletes. European journal of applied physiology, 118(7), 1331-1338.

Double Blind / Verification Marking Process:

These assessments will be subject to mark verification, whereby a second member of staff scans 10% (min 6, max 20) of the assessments to ascertain that the marks for the module are broadly appropriate and have been fairly arrived at.
