Essentials of Global Epidemiology

Learning outcomes for the module

By the end of this module students should be able to:

1. Critically discuss the role and contribution of epidemiology to inform global health and access information from appropriate sources of global, national and local population health data;

2. Demonstrate critical awareness of the concepts, principles, processes and multidisciplinary nature of epidemiology in global public health related research;

3. Critically evaluate the effectiveness of different epidemiological methods used in the context of global and national public health;

4. Demonstrate an ability to critically appraise and interpret epidemiological studies;

5. Critically review epidemiological evidence relating to health, illness and disease to inform an understanding of the global burden and major determinants of disease.

For both assessments you will choose an individual lifestyle behaviour and a condition/disease that it is linked to

  • Smoking and lung cancer (MY Topic)

You will be looking at these from a global perspective for both assessments and will use the same topic area for both the presentation and the epidemiological review.

Assessment 1: 12 minute oral presentation (weighted at 30%)

A global overview of the data that illustrates the burden of disease to public health. This will include the prevalence of the lifestyle behaviour and the incidence and prevalence of the disease that it is linked to.

Using Bradford Hills criteria of causation, provide an epidemiological review that illustrates how your selected lifestyle behaviour causes a disease. The review should include a justification of the choice of topic in relation to public health, which will include data to illustrate the public health burden.

By the end of this module students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate critical understanding of global health issues within the framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals;

2. Critically analyse the scale and development of major global health challenges, including communicable and non-communicable diseases;

3. Critically review the range and interrelationship of geographical, environmental, political, economic, social and cultural factors giving rise to global public health problems.

4. Critically evaluate the impact of globalisation on health and wellbeing.

5. Critically reflect on how UN Sustainable Development Goals guide local public health agenda in the global context.

1. Define Malaria (With different supporting or contrasting authors)
2. Discuss critically. Be critical with different authors in different periods and arrive at a logical conclusion
3. Briefly talk about Malaria. Don’t go to deep on the clinical aspect of the disease
4. What are the statistics
5. Critically analyse the scale and development of Malarai
6. Who does it affect the most, which region etc
7. Focus on the Global Public Health Burden
8. Policies
9. Sanitation,
10. Economic Implication
11. Impact of the disease on public health
12. Global burden of the disease(mortality, morbidity, incidence, prevalence, daly’s
13. Explain Malaria with the aim of covering the module outcomes
14. Has Globalisation helped in the spread/reduction of Malaria (Using Evidence and studies, citations)
15. Is it a communicable or non-communicable disease
