Assessments submitted via SurreyLearn are checked in Turnitin as per our normal academic integrity process. So remember – you need to write your answer in your own words. For further guidance, see the university’s remote learning guide to Avoiding Collusion and Plagiarism.
Frequently Asked Questions – Final exam
Where can I get more information about online exams?
A This website has all the relevant information and particularly the FAQ has a section on what to do if you have difficulties.
If you have difficulties, you need to contact the module leader and Academic HIVE straight away and log the issue (please see FAQ in the link above). The assessment teams will look at each logged EC submission individually and assess each case individually.
What if I have internet issues when trying to submit my exam answers? A You should continue trying to upload your answers before the due time/date. If this fails you must contact IT department to solve the issue. If IT department cannot solve issues within the 24 hours assessment period. You can also email your answers to your module leader, If you still have problems before the due time, you should take screenshots as evidence of internet issues to support an application for Extenuating Circumstances.
You will be expected to have made sure that you have a suitable location and equipment to successfully complete the online exam.
Can I submit handwritten answers or EXCEL workings?
A Answers should normally be typed into the WORD question document.
Tables can be used for numerical questions and excel workings and graphs can be copied and pasted into the WORD document. In the case of complex formulas or workings, handwritten answers pasted into the WORD document will be accepted.
However, this is likely to be time-consuming and you are encouraged to type your answers wherever possible. All explanations or other narrative answers must be typed as they will be checked via Turnitin. A separate EXCEL document is not allowed. Any EXCEL workings must be copied and pasted into your WORD document. You are only allowed to submit one WORD document for the final exam.
Will we be penalised for using definitions taken straight from the textbook? A No, definitions will be picked up by Turnitin but will be ignored when looking for evidence of plagiarism. However I do not expect other explanations to be similar between two students. This is a take home exam but this does not mean that you are allowed to consult with anyone else, including other students. Your answers must be your own work.
Can I write my answer in a new WORD document or after each question in the question paper?
A You should type your answer after each question in the question paper rather than in a new WORD document as this will save you from jumping from one screen to another to write your answer. Remember that the word count from the questions will not be counted.
