Eukaryotic cells are the cells that contain a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, and lysosomes. These cells are found in organisms such as animals, plants, fungi, and protists. Eukaryotic cells are distinguished from prokaryotic cells by their larger size, more complex structure, and the presence of a variety of specialized structures that perform specific functions.

They are composed of two membranes, an outer membrane, and an inner membrane that is highly folded to increase its surface area. The inner membrane contains the enzymes and proteins necessary for the electron transport chain and ATP synthesis, which is the final stage of cellular respiration that generates energy for the cell. Mitochondria are also involved in other cellular processes such as apoptosis (programmed cell death), calcium signaling, and lipid metabolism.
Eukaryotic cells also contain a complex system of membrane-bound organelles collectively called the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The ER is composed of two types: the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) and the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER). The RER is so named because it is studded with ribosomes, which are responsible for protein synthesis. Proteins synthesized on the RER are transported to other parts of the cell or are secreted from the cell. The SER, on the other hand, lacks ribosomes and is involved in lipid metabolism, calcium storage, and detoxification of drugs and toxins.
The Golgi apparatus is another unique structure found only in eukaryotic cells. The Golgi apparatus is a stack of flattened, membrane-bound sacs called cisternae that are responsible for the sorting, modification, and packaging of proteins and lipids synthesized in the ER. The Golgi apparatus also plays a role in the formation of lysosomes, which are organelles that contain hydrolytic enzymes that break down and recycle cellular waste and debris.
Lysosomes are another unique structure found only in eukaryotic cells. Lysosomes are small, spherical organelles that contain hydrolytic enzymes responsible for breaking down and recycling cellular waste and debris.
