In the Surveys of Scholars, he was always ranked the top 3 and most often number 1. In the presidential poll vote done in 1948, he also ranked in the top among the majority, in 6th November 1860; he was elected as the 16th president. He received nearly 500,000 or more votes defeating his rival Democrat Stephen Doughlas after winning two states out of 996 countries in all the Southern States.
Abraham Lincoln was the legendary American president, who was believed to be the global icon of peace; his legacy has always been a powerful symbol against all kinds of oppression. Lincoln had the greatest contribution towards mankind because of his fight against the eradication of slavery, many people tried to stop them but Lincoln kept on working on his terms. He kept on fighting against all the evils; his legacy also became glorious over the time
As the civil war ended the American society proposed different strategies, the murder of the 16th president led to many changes in the authority of the country and it left the country to select its new president. On the dark summer night, his assassination was planned; it took the life of the President of the United States. The attempt of the Lincoln took place in August 1864 year, on that night Mr Nicholas claimed that he was on sentinel duty in front of the large gates, around 11’o clock he heard about the rifle shot.
John Wilkes Booth was the man behind the attack, he was a very well known actor then and was also a spy of the Confederate army and had contacts with the secret services. After attending the speech of Lincoln on the date 11th April 1865, he in speech promoted the voting rights of the black people, over there Mr Booth planned the assassination. As Booth came to know about Lincoln’s plan to attend the play of “general grant” he decides to kill Lincoln. The whole incident took place inside the “ford’s theatre” while Lincoln and his wife attended the play, “Our American Cousin” on the eve of 14th April.
After the massive failure of the two attempts, to kidnap President, Mr Booth decided not to risk anymore and to straight kill the president. He had a great master plan; he even planned to assassinate the vice president “Andrew Johnson”, Secretary “State William Seward” in the same place and time along with his collaborators. As Lincoln attended the theatre, Booth’s teammates also planned to kill President’s wife and made plans regarding that as well. In the middle of the play, Booth tended to slip in the entryway to the Box of the President, the clock strikes 10.15 pm, when Booth entered the back of the theatre and fired from the back, he shot Lincoln straight on the head.
After the successful execution Booth vaulted in the front of the box, caught the right leg in the flag and landed on the stage after breaking his leg. He also, shouted “Sic Semper Tyrannis” which means “thus is it to the tyrants”. The bullet was pointed to Lincoln’s head. It hit his head and just behind his left ear, the hit head tore his brain, injured his right eye as well. Lincoln was brought to the neighbour boarding house, in the next day morning he was declared dead. After the success of the death plan of Lincoln, one of the Booth’s team members went to Seward’s house majorly wounded the Secretary of the State, but Sward survived. Another accomplice, “George Atzerodt” could make enough chance to assassinate Vice president Johnson.
Later, it was investigated and they found out that the bodyguard of Lincoln “John parker” also left at that moment of the time to watch the play, after that he also went to the nearest saloon in the intermission. It was in the same saloon where Booth was drinking, investigators were unable to find the fact where the bodyguard was killed, as his body could not be located anywhere.
After the entire assassination took place, Booth was able to go out from the “ford theatre” alive and kept on hiding for 12 days along with his other conspirators “David Herold. Even “Surrant Tavern” from Marry land went to see Doctor after Booth’s leg was broken. Later, it was found out that the original plan was initially to kidnap Abraham as he returns from the play in the Campbell Hospital”, but Lincoln changed his plans and when to the military ceremony, this made Booth change his plans immediately.
The Late President Abraham Lincoln’s body was laid in the “first in the east room” of the white house, and then he was moved to the “Capitol Rotunda” from 19th April to 21st April. Lincoln’s body travelled for three weeks via a special funeral train. The train followed the route from Washington DC to Springfield then from Illinois to several other cities, his funeral was attended by hundreds and thousands of people. Many people gathered around the train tracks, they sang a hymn, lit bonfires as well as passed bands. In Abraham’s memory, Poet Walt Whitzman composed “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom”, other than this he wrote four different poems about Lincoln. African to American people everybody was moved and upset over the factor that he was killed and shot dead.
Till today, people pay tribute to such significant character, Lincoln’s portrait is present in the US currently, in a penny and a $5 bill. He has been memorialized in many towns, city and countries as well. The nation capital holds popularly visited monuments called “Lincoln Memorial”, his photo is used in the postage stamp during the year 18186 by United States Post office after his first death anniversary.
The impact of Abraham Lincoln was severe; it raged anger in between the north and south. Lincoln had a plan of reconstruction of the nations, after the civil war ended they formed a group of “radical republicans” which was to control the proposed plan of reconstruction and the plan of treating the south nicely, making a bond or treaty in between the north and south. Lincoln’s idea of reconstruction was to unite the two poles, but the radical republicans looked into this reconstruction as the opportunity to punish the south. Therefore, in 1866, Congress passed out the “Wade Davis Bill” which brought many consequences in between them.
If Lincoln would have been present, he would have faced or handled the situation well but at that time, the Country was suffering from good leadership So, the next elected president Johnson passed a similar plan as Lincoln’s. Just after the ending of the Civil war, the southern states passed many laws to restrict the rights of the blacks, for example, there was the issuance of “black codes in Mississippi. Another example is the law that stops interracial marriages, levied death punishment if discriminated against. Similarly, another code restricted the areas where Black people used to live, they were devoid from giving any kind of permission to rent any house, land, outside the town and have to remain inside their confined area.
These following, actions angered Southern states and congress passes sweeping legislation in the reconstruction years, The Congressmen “Charles Sumner”, “ Thaddeus Stevens “issued an act on the purpose of Black freedom, their education, training and lastly fight for justice. In the next following year, the 1866 Civil war of congress passed the “Civil rights” intending to solve all kinds of tensions involved in the United States. Congress further passed the “reconstruction act” which prohibited "the states from involving in Congress until they revise their own state’s constitutions and take measures for it.
The sudden assassination of Abraham Lincoln shattered the whole world; nobody could believe that he will be shot dead. However, his works and activities are still being remembered by everyone because he works hard towards providing the Black people with their right to live and survive. But, the assassination of Lincoln ended his major plan of Reconstruction to unite the Northern States and the Southern States. There were large amounts of misunderstandings between Johnson (the president) and the radical republicans, which made the whole purpose of the plan a failure and also made the president ineffective. In the following years, Congress took actions against him, as Johnson violated the law called, “the tenure of the office act” that forbade the president from firing any kind of member of the Cabinet. The plan failed miserably, but Abraham Lincoln contribution is still remembered, he is still proclaimed as "father of the nation".
